I am a guitar player who is wanting to start recording at home, mainly for personal use for now. I like the specs on the Boss BR-864 especially the drum and bass effects. My question is are there other units that have instrument effects built in? I have read the specs on many different units but I can't quite figure out which have these other instrument effects and which don't. Also I will be saving to a laptop and using Cool Edit Pro.

Boss does have cool amp sounds and the drum machine works, if you don't have access to something else. I have a BR-532, and since my amps and effects pedals suck, I use the recorder for amp, and drum tracks. Haven't used anything else, but some others have, and they can inform you of other options.

Good luck.

Thanks Dogman. There seem to be a lot of BR-532's for sale on eBay. My other choice would probably be the Fostex MR 8 unless someone has a better idea.

You might consider the Zoom MR 8. It too has drum and bass programs. Also records in 24 bit on SD cards. It gets pretty good ratings. I own a 1266 and have had good results with it.

You must have read my mind. I was just checking out the Zoom unit. OK so here are my choices-Boss 864 * Boss 532 * Fostex MB 8* Zoom MR 8. Guess I'll look for the best deal.

not sure if you've purchased one already, but i have the br-864 and have been using it for about 7 months. i've done just about everything imagineable with it and love it. i am moving into the computer-based recording world now, so i might be parting with it soon, but it is a tremendous little unit for the money. give me your e-mail address and i'd be happy to send you some of the songs i've written on it so you get an idea of the quality (they are complete with vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, and internal drum machine). let me know if you are interested. thanks.

Hey Dave thanks for the review of this unit. If you could e mail me a song or two that you have done on this machine. I'm currentley using a Sharp md 702 to record my band live rehearsals. It is as it's burned though, sond quality is good, but I have no post options. How many tracks can you lay down at one time ? Thanks for your help. Ron

Just my 2 cents, but if you want to get really good guitar tones, you are better off putting a mic in front of your amp. Those units that have built-in effects (I have the Fostex MR-8) means that you are DI'ing it, and it will not sound as good. Plus no amount of eq'ing will help...
