Death Program

I've been using a Boss BR-1180 cd and I'm about ready to upgrade, and I've got my eye on the br 1600, but from looking at it online it doesn't appear to really be a 16 track recorder, just 8 tracks and 4 doubled up mastering/drum tracks. Plus it doesn't seem to have any more power or frequency range than the BR 1180, instead it appears to just add some flashy and ergonomic features.

I'm tempted to just save up for the VS 2480 and then not have to worry about upgrading recorders again for a long time, or never. One thing that concerns me though, is that with Boss/Roland coming out with new models such as the 1600, if I drop 4 grand on the VS 2480, is it suddenly going to be old news in 6 months when the modernized version comes out? Any input would be much appreciated.

Sound on Sound mag jsut reviewed it and, in their suble way, rather slated it. The good points were that it is very quiet, and for a band that just wants to do simple demo's all in one box without getting complicated, it's fine. However it has very limited signal routing choices (just one pair of stereo outs, on phono plugs) and puts a long chain of effects etc. in the way of every incoming signal. Also there's a lot of onboard drum machines etc., which you might not want to pay for. And you're right, it's not a true 16 tracker.

DON'T GET THE 2480

You don't want the vs-2480 or the 2400 because it is very complicated to mix on them meaning that they have different pages for everything so in the long run it will be unnecessary things you have to do to mix using it

Thanks for the informative replies, RD and Gary. I think I'll spend the rest of the year saving $ and learning and deciding what to upgrade to. I've been playing guitar and bass for 20 years, and recording for only 3 (I only know digital, I'm ashamed to say!) so I've got a ways to go.

However the 2400 has a VGA out which means you can hook up a monitor and mouse and not have to mess with all that stuff....

Premo machine, I got one.

Br 1600cd

I've had this unit for about 3 months now, and even though I've only used it to about 20% of its capability, I highly recommend it. I have been a recording engineer since the eighties, and I'm blown away. For the money, you won't find better. If you need a LOT of routing options, you will find it limiting, otherwise you can work around any limitations with the machine. Lots of fun!

vs-2000cd

Hi, you may want to go with the VS-2000cd. It is a great unit that I've used to record some demos. I do have one and since I've completed my project, I'm looking for interested buyers. $1600 shipped. I have pics, manuals, wires, etc. that came with it and used about 6 hours onto it. Email me if you're interested.
