Ok so i hav be trying to put together my closet as a booth and i got an idea from a youtube video to just use bed foam instead of buying the really expensive sound proof stuff u get at guitar center ect.

It seemed to hav worked pretty well.
i attached the foam all around the closet covering every inch of wall except my door.

So my questions are, If i were to put foam on my door how much more of a differnnce would it make and also would a bass trap on my ceiling do any much of a difference?

any help is appreciated thanks.

You need bass trapping in the corners. It's not sound proofing, it's acoustical treatment - that is, it doesn't provide sound isolation, it absorbs sound reflections. You especially need lots of it in a small room, your sound source will be closer to walls and the sound hitting the wall will be stronger, and your reflections will be stronger as a result. Foam does NOTHING except kill off some of the highs, and the high freq's aren't going to be your problem in a closet at all. All the mids and lows will go right thru it, foam will NOT help one bit with your bass problems. Foam may make your room sound dead to you, but that's because your ears hear (or dont hear) the airy high's, it's really an audio illusion. Your mics are going to hear the truth.

Google up on OC-703, that's the standard material used to build your own bass traps for relatively cheap. Some ppl use rockwool, mineral wool, roxul. Search around for these things instead - you'll find that there are optimal material densitys for sound absorption. Foam doesn't come close, foam is a waste of $$ and probably a fire hazard as well.

Heres a quick video of my closet and some pictures maybe u guys can get a better perspective on it and be able to help me a little more.

How would you guys sound proof this closet without spending tooooo much money?
im willing to spend some cash but not crazyyyyyy amounts.

question for supastar... so wat if i were to just strip the corners of the foam and put in bass traps? would that work well?

No video link. ?? Is your closet full of clothes? I hear clothes can help absorb a lot. Yeah corner traps are gonna be the best. How much is 'toooooo much money' ? :D

edit- ahh u need 5 or 10 posts or something to post links and pics.... How bout a quick description, dimensions, etc.. and I dont think the foam will HURT anything, it's just not helping at all..

i got enough posts i think can u click those links i posted??

Yep i see em. Any reason you want to do this in your closet? You could just sing in your main open room, you won't have nearly as much acoustic problems to battle against. Little rooms are hard to tame, and that's a REAL little room. If your mics are picking up the pc or something, I'd put the pc in the closet instead! Vocal booths are usually a bad idea, unless they're designed and constructed to be a vox booth...

oh realllyy? damn.. well in my room i hav a window and it would be hard to get away from the noise outside... im going to try n draw a picture of my room real quick for to check out.. a real rough sketch.. cuz im really tryin to get my sound right and im curious of where to start and wat goes where .. just a sec ima upload the link

The bigger room would definitely be better.

I don't know where this nasty little obsession with "booths" comes from lately. It's a major mis-conception. Maybe people hear the word "booth" and think anything the size of a phone "booth" is good. In pro studios, their "booths" are the size of most people's tracking rooms.

A closet, even a "walk-in" closet, is a horrible place to record.

I always record vocals in my main room, due to the fact I did not bother with building a booth. The vocals sound great anywhere within the room and I used treatment and trapping that can be made by any handy person. Click my link to the studio and look at photos of the recording room.

The only time a booth would be handy is for recording vocals or acoustic instruments live with the band, but I get around this with a bit of screening.

Why the hell would anyone want to lock themselves in a small booth and destroy the vibe? Don't forget that booths you read about in pro studios are the size of a small bedroom.

Cheers
Alan.

I think Id put the mixing desk along the right wall where the door/bed are, centered betw the top/botom walls. Firing your speakers down the long length of the room will get weaker reflections off the back wall. Plus the window at your back will let some of the reflection escape, it'll reflect less than any walls, assuning the glass is less than like an inch thick! Put the couch where the window is, it'll soak up some of those reflections as well. If you can get the mixing desk off the wall a couple feet, that'd help acoustially, plus then you can get behind the desk to dink with cords. Mount the bed on the wall in front of the desk like a big picture, that'l help absorb some reflection off the near front wall :D

You could build a gobo for your mic, I'd set that up right behind the desk, singer facing the window. A couple cases of 703 and you could build panels for your corners and a couple strategic spots. That'd be my plan for your room.. I'll make you a little pic when I get to work.

Something along the lines of:

I'd make a little 'v' or 'c' shaped gobo and try it in different locations in the room. I'd start right in front of the couch facing the window with the gobo between the mic and window. I'm not an expert, but in my mind dead center seems like it'd have the most prob's with all the reflections coming back at the same time.... You could even put it on a hinge and fold it up when you aren't using it, put it against a wall and it'd take up practically zero space.

thanks man.. i just might do that haha it sounds like it wuld work preetty well..

is it always good to hav the mic in the center of the room rather then a corner?

becuz i was thinkin i culd put the mic directly to the left of the desk behind the bed? and maybe put the gobo there and the bass trap behind the mic in the corner
