I just won one off of ebay for $96... been hunting for quite a while for one of these rare babies. I think Harvey has a couple, and I'm trying to get some ideas of where this thing really shines.
How is the top end? Is the bass good and solid? Any comparisons to a Speck?
Thanks.
Paul

You scored a really good and useful parametric EQ for less than a hundredge.

Pat yourself on the back.

btw -- I particularly like the shelves. That's where it really stands out for me.

We have either 4 or 5 of them. Does that answer your question?

Hey, what are this things strong points, and its weak? I'm just wondering how the top is mostly, I want to add some air to a lot of stuff and to the final mixes too.
I almost scored a second one today already but someone beat me out by $2. Bastards.
These will do I guess until I get some Specks. :)

you may want to look at the UAD-1 card if you want to just add air. the UAD cambridge is pretty damn good not to mention all the other cool plugs that come wit it... IMHO its a necessity for a native setup...

you can even check out the new PSP masterQ...i'm not too sure which one is better but the PSP shit sounds fantastic too, high shelf is even smoother then the vintage warmer

I really haven't found any weak spots. We also have a pair of Speck EQs, and they're both useful, with the dbx 242's being a little more versatile. The infinite notch filters are especially useful and unique to the dbx. Both eq's are very musical sounding and won't fuck up the sound when used properly.

so harvey you think they are in the same league as the speck w/tranny and w/o?

Well, we use them pretty much interchangably. I know there are some mods that will improve the performance of the 242's considerably, but so far, we haven't found a need to do the mods. They hold their own pretty well against the Speck eqs and they remain an undervalued piece of gear. dbx doesn't even acknowledge their existance on any of the dbx website pages.

We try to pretend the Project One series never existed.;)

I have two 242's based on Harvey's recommendation. I work at dbx and Harvey had to turn me on to them.:)

30 years and 3 or 4 ownership changes tend to lose some things in the mists of time.

Get 'em while you still can.

yup. the infinite notch down is fun. you can get all sorts of silly filter effects with it.

shelves be very easy to use as well. now that i think of it, man i use them a lot. they are set up to be quite forgiving.

ummm..

i guess the point of this unit is that it eq's rather inoffensively. kinda an rnc of eq. it isnt filled with mojo, but it doesnt do anything wrong either...

Sounds like its gonna be fun. I'm going to hunt down another for a pair.

Hey Tom or Harvey, sell me one of yours, you dont REALLY need em. :)
