Anyone know how Bob Dylan had his guitars mic'd in his first few albums? Did they use one or two mics? Did they double track etc...

thanks

I have cancelled the research. I fixed my level problems.

Ya, but what about Dylan?

Yeah, I'm curious too. On the first album (Bob Dylan) it sounds like one track with two mics--one on the guitar and one to cover the vocal/harmonica. The vocal/harmonica track is panned hard left and the guitar hard right. If you mute one channel and listen carefully to the vocal track, you can hear the guitar bleeding through. The same applies to the guitar track. It's a bizzare mix by modern standards and it's really odd on the old ipod! I'm not sure about Times Are A Changin' or Freewheelin'. You might want to post up on the mic board for more input.

No worries. This thread was here for so long without a reply I thought no one even knew who Bob Dylan was.

Anyway, I was posting because I needed some kind of a reference for acoustic guitar recording and I figured BD did a lot of that. I had an input vol problem, but now everything is sweet.

On the subject of BD, I do know that he didn't really care about the dynamics of recording. He was just keen to get things down. But I suppose the producers and engineers would have wised to that as he became more and more famous, and they would have at least prepared good mic setups etc.

Apparently BD did not do many overdubs etc. But even on his first album there is a song or two where it looks as if he has recorded another track of just "wooooo ooooo". So, he knew you could do it. Funny that he only used it for "wooo oooo".

I'm pretty sure that on 'Don't Think Twice It's Alright' he overdubbed his voice and harmonica. Because he didn't play the guitar to that song. Not sure if he was recorded singing and playing live over the other guy doing the fingerpicking, or if he came back later and overdubbed.

Anyway...

Like my daughter once said, "Isn't he Jake Dylan's dad."

bobby is/was famous for coming into the studio, one take, thats it, no rehersal, no nuttin. thats why a lot of people think he can't sing, but in 'lay lady lay' he actually does sing. musta been an off day.

allegedly, now he will spend more time in the studio, but that is just rumor.

if you still want to know, one of these guys, like masanburg, harvey, or fletcher will probably be able to tell you, chop, chop.

millions of dollars of experience there, like a Klaus heine modified brauner is around 10K? and you can ask him stuff, and he will actually answer! also fletcher has vast experience at the best known vendor of high end equipment, mercenary audio, and is not shy about giving you his opinion, if he has come in contact with what you want to know about (and chance are he has).

Yeah, I read once that he liked to only do 1 or 2 takes, and that he had the attitude, "ah that'll do, that's it". In terms of engineering, he was at the opposite end of the spectrum to The Beatles, who really got into the studio and technique. But then they went all 'Let It Be' and wanted to strip down the effects and gimmicks. Then I believe Phil 'pistol' Spectre got involved and lushed it all up. Then, I believe a year or so ago the intended 'dry' mix of Let It Be was released.

and there's lots of cool mistakes by other musicians that are left on. it's amazing.

I love that guitar sound from the first 2 lp's I'd like to know how it was mic'd and the room and stuff. I'm sure there was compression at least on mastering.

Yeah, I think it's "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" - the one about sailing on the Mayflower - where Bob starts up then everyone breaks up laughing. It has a great acoustic sound to it. Was the original version of Maggie's Farm acoustic? I think it was...that sound is really good too.
