Blues OD boxes?

Hey all. I'm looking for a nice bluesy OD in a nice stombox. I know I can't afford a 1966 Fender Twin to crank up and get the sound I want, but is there anything that will come close?

Ibanez tube screamer. not the shitty grey one. I'm talking the green expensive one. The turbo one doesn't have many usable sounds, so stick with the original....if you can get an old tube screamer that would be ideal.

There are a bunch of good overdrive pedals, there are SOME i can't recommend:
Boss, Danelectro (I'm sorry Richard!), or Digitech.

To me , the boss super overdrive just isn't as good as a tube screamer, and the daneletros ive used has been good pedals up until they broke...and they break pretty easily. Digitech pedals don't do it for me either. Overdrive/distortion is VERY complicated...and I believe some of the more expensive analog designs will improve your chances of getting a sound you'll like.

Part of this question needs to be answered by what amp you are planning on using this "OD" pedal with.?... Different amps respond differently to different pedals and so forth..

If you're using a tube amp, and you're looking for that slight to medium natural tube breaking up sort of sound, Then I would highly recomend a Keeley Modded Boss BD-2 (Pretty much no contest if you ask me IMO)

I would look for a nice tube screamer, or if you can find one on the cheap, an Ibanez Metal Charger or Super Tube. They have the same chip as an old tube screamer, but sound way better IMHO. Good luck on the tone quest!
 
A friend of mine has a Maxon OD808 (I think) that sounds pretty nice.

This makes me think of the time I got into an argument with someone on another web forum who insisted that the Tube Screamer was a tube emulator pedal designed with the intention of making solid state amps sound like tube amps.

hahahah ouch that must have been a ROUGH argument. I've never heard anything like that ever. ha.

The Maxon IS a great pedal. The only reason I left it out is because I forgot about it.
 
OD's to ckeck out

Look at the Keeley BD-2 Phat mod, Maxon OD-820,Voodoo Labs Sparkledrive, and the Hermida Zendrive. Any of these pedals can get you the tone your looking for, but only YOUR ears can tell you what sounds good to you.
 
For that "classic blues sound," you can't beat an old Fender cranked up, but for decent blusey sounds a Tube Screamer should get you pretty cloce.

While I haven't played every OD/Dist. pedal, so far this is the best one I've heard for overdrive to "almost modern metal" distortion.

Bingo...totally different effect when you push the front end of a transistor amp vs a tube amp.
 
I have a ProCo rat box that I've enjoyed very much over the last 20 years. I keep the distortion knob at just under 9:00 and the level at like 2:00, with the filter in between 11 and 12. I think it gives a great blues sound. It's not distortion. It just is clear and a little ornery.
