Blue Mics

I use the Baby through either an Avalon M5 or a Great River ME-1NV. These two combos sound fantastic on acoustic instruments and vocals.

Do a search for BLUE and you'll find plenty of folks using Baby Bottles and Dragonflys, and there's a couple of guys also using Kiwi's on a very regular basis.

get the bottle

I second that, but I am thinking that a babay bottle would probably fit the budget better. BLUE makes a very unique an wonderful line of products. The build is excellent and the sounds are great. I think the Baby bottle would be a really nice first mic, but maybe not as flexible as some others. However, if it were me, I would still get the Baby Bottle:)

As far as preamps, there are a couple of decent offerings in the $500 range. Mostly RNP, Focusrite platinum (I have continually been pretty disimpressed with these), Grace 101, D&R, Summit 2b?*?, and Presonus etc... I certainly wouldn't say any of them are "bad" sounding, but I definately prefer certain ones over others. If however you were to save a bit more until you got to the $1000 range, a whole new set of options opens up. Personally, those items sound soooo much better, that I don't think you would regret it. At least you wouldn't if you are serious about what you do.

However you decide, good luck and try out as many things as you possibly can before you actually buy:)

Let's say I hold off and stow away $500 more to put into a pre, what would you suggest. If I'm going to spend that much, can i get compression/limiting capabilities as well?

Thanks for everyones advise, this is the best board i have ever been on for ANYTHING!!

The Great River and Avalon I mentioned are right in that 1 grand range.

Getting a full channel strip that matches the quality of the preamps in the $1k range may not be a real possibility. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. If you need EQ and compression also you may need to save up yet another $500:( If you absolutely need it, you should be able to find something used for somewhere around there. If you were to get something like the Universal Audio m610 it would have a two band EQ on it that sounds pretty nice (a good 2 band is a lot more useful than many people might think).

If you want a real tube pre for around that price, it can be had with the Summit Audio 2BA-221. I am having a lot of fun with this pre, and I think it sounds great. There's a lot of variable tone options with the tube drive part of the circuit (which is not a starved plate design, BTW) and the variable impedence. It is also the best DI I've used, especially on bass.

toft atc-2
has good preamp, good compressor and excellent eq and 2 channels

I have the BLUE Mouse.
Its a pretty specialized mike in that it wont sound great on everything all the time, but when it works, it works wonderfully!

www.safesoundaudio.com is worth a mention. The guy is a former Neve designer (although this is not a Neve clone) who knows his stuff.

The P1 gives you a mic preamp / D.I. / line level / expander / compressor / limiter with a built in monitoring / headphone amp section that allows you to record without digital latency.

Just went to the Focusrite site and saw that they are now bundleing the vmp with the new Bluebird. Anyone out there use the Bluebird yet? Is it better than the Baby Bottle? They say it was made for Digi and Focusrite exclusively.

Thanks

I have one. It is very nice. It came bundled with my 002, and plugins, ect. It has a nice smooth sound. Not as aggressive as the baby bottle, but not a ton different. I'm not a big fan of the baby bottle on vocals but the bluebird does a good job, and it sounds really nice on acoustic as well.

Steve,

If you wanna try it next to the baby bottle let me know and I can drop it off to you for a few days.
