Road
when the blue songbird woke me from my childish sleep
happily i had no engagement to keep
so i kicked off my cleats and my dusty old socks
and let my mind skip to the ticks and the tocks
of the polished old clock in the front parlor hall
steady in rhythm so lean and so tall
where behind it id hidden a dime and a key
no one would know cept the chiming an me
come back the sunlight that shown thru the glass
come back the scent of the wind on the grass
come back the cool nights thru which I would roam
come back the love and the comfort of home
midmorning shadow matched my every stride
on my trek to the dimestore for treasure i spied
my nose to the window hot breath clouds my view
of comic books, toy trucks and skates all brand new
how i wish i had money for all this and more
a thin dime don't buy much in this here dime store
so i head on back down to the back alley lots
play stick ball and marbles tie kite tales in knots
come back the sunlight that shone thru the glass
come back the scent of the wind on the grass
come back the cool nights thru which I would roam
come back the love and the comfort of home
then i run thru the field where the tall grass is waving
too far from home but I'm not misbehaving
the afternoon sunshine is hot on my back
lie down and look up, no there's nothing i lack
the moon on a blue sky's a curious thing
the cloud is a horse his rider a king
a faint voice from homeward i know i cant stay
the bluebirds this morning don't seem like today
come back the sunlight that shone thru the glass
come back the scent of the wind on the grass
come back the cool nights thru which I would roam
come back the love and the comfort of home
happily i had no engagement to keep
