Hey guys. So i was on my comp this afternoon and the thing died. Luckly it was an ancient peice of sh*t that i only used for recording with my firepod. So i need a new comp. I am affluent with both mac and pc, so im not worried about that, and i think i want to go mac. I have a nice 21" viewsonic CRT and am thinking about getting a mac mini. How are they? Can I rum logic or Logic express and my firepod on one? I was running nuendo2 with my firepod on a 450mhz p3 in some old compaq i found, and it was fine till the hd died today. Also, maybe a 14" ibook g4. I can get a 1ghz for like nothing. Which would be better? I would love the laptop, but will the mini be more stable? PLEASE HELP FAST. I am getting a new comp in the next day or 2!

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????//

Dude, you left less than two hours for people to respond?!
I have pretty much zero experience with apple computers, but the mini looks more like a toy to me than a recording computer.

The mac mini is a decent computer, still powerful, the only downside to it is it doesnt come with PCI card, so if you ever want to go down that route...well, you cant. It can have a maximum of 1gb RAM which is pretty good. I would suggest, unless your going to be travelling around alot, that you should get a G4 powermac. Same processor as the mac mini, but gives you much more options to upgrade. Or, if you have quite a big budget, go for the monster G5 :)

Just some thoughts for you there, good luck!

Laptop recording can be tough. I started that way and abandoned it in favor of a desktop.

i dont really want to spenc any money because i wasnt even intending on getting a new computer

Get yourself on eBay and find yourself a nice second hand G4 powermac. You can get them at like £400-£500 ($550 - $700?) maybe even cheaper than that on eBay. You should be able to find something in your price range.

the powermac G4 sounds like a good idea. the macmini seems to hardwired for me. great for generic uses (internet, email, word processeing) may not be so great for specific tasks like audio production. It may work for you, we don't know your setup, but it is limited.

I'd go with the mini

I have a powermac G5 and plan on getting a firepod within a month or two.
I have heard alot of great things about the mac mini from people at my school, who do video editing and multimedia stuff on it

good luck

Again, the mini is quite poweful for what it is and im sure that you can use it for audio recording/editing etc. The thing i said above ^^ was that it doesnt have PCI slots (which is fine aslong as you stick with the firepod), but its also very basic for upgrading. The max RAM it can take is 1GB where as the G4 powermac can hold up to...4GB? Also with the powermac you can get dual processors. I would recommend the mac mini if you are going to be travelling around a bit, but if your just going to be stuck in the same place, i would say go for the powermac, its the same processors, and around the same price.

Have a scan around, dont rush into buying anything until you know what you want.

Good luck!

thnx guys! I do need to comp in the next week, but the tech guy at my stepdads work is giving me one of the extra new mac laptops they just got. I am not sure wat it is yet, because my stepdad dosnt know computers, but i am guessing 12" powerbook or 12" ibook g4.! And yes, i want moble because i am going to be recording gigs.

..

I use a firepod and a 14" iBook G4.
I bought an external 7200 RPM drive for slightly better performance.
(although I haven't been able to totally max it yet to see just what it can handle)

The basic Firepod->iBook setup without the external would max out pretty quick when recording multiple live tracks. It works fine for track by track recording though and can handle a good bit of automation and processing via plugins when mixing.
