Blown fuse

Damned if I do
So my Mackie 1604 finally blew its original fuse after about 10 years. I picked up some new ones but discovered I got the worng ones. I need 1 amp but bought 2 amp. So the question is....

Can I use the 2 amp fuse safely, at least just for tonight? I can't imagine there's any serious problem with the mixer; it's been used only in the studio and hasn't been moved much.

Thanks.

do you know why the fuse blew? If you are plugging it into the same power source then I'd be weary, because there must have been a problem which caused the fuse to blow. They don't usually just blow for fun!

I'd probably risk it for one night, but I would be worried,

Don't blame me when something goes wrong, becasue it just might.

No, I have no idea why it blew. The last time I tried to turn it on it just didn't. But keep in mind this is the fuse that came with the board which has been working flawlessly for 10 years.

I might try it just to see if it at least turns on.

Thanks, dr.colossus. Anyone else?

The tech folks won't recommend you change it out for a 2...that's a 100% current increase.

A good question was why did it blow in the first place? A surge...while you were using it or what? After two years...it's hard to tell...possibly a loose holder which could generate heat and eventually wear the fuse out.

I had a small studio amp that would blow fuses regularly. The kind with the half/twist black cover/holder fuse....you know...anyways...I ended up putting in nice tight fitting blade fuse holder...put the same sized fuse in and never had an outage since.

I would replace it with the original size no matter...and see what happens...best protection against serious equipment damage...never put a bigger fuse in unless it's supported by the manufacuter.

Thanks very much, punkin! I'm kinda clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff. I'm glad I didn't try it yet.

As to why, I have no idea. The mixer was working fine the last time I used it. I did my shut down as usual, and the next time I tried to turn it on - nothing.

Fuses by nature carry current which translates to heat...mechanical connections make even more heat...it could be simple fatigue. I would replace it with a factory replacment...if it blow again soon...have it checked out or at least have a long hard look at the connections...10 years..I'm thinkin' not so serious...if it blows again in a day,,...week or month...probably something going on.

Peace and good will.

Well, I finally get the proper fuse, put it in, turn on the mixer, and...

the power supply starts buzzing, all the clip lights go red and the main meters start ramping up. I shut it off quickly and disconnect the power cord.

*#@&! I think my power supply has gone bad. Crap! I'll probably have to wait until after New Year's to take it to the shop. This blows!

Bummer...sorry to hear that. I'm not familiar with that unit...does it have an external power supply? Just think...if you'd put in a bigger fuse, the fuse would be too big to save the unit from self destruction and could have done a lot more damage.

Hope you get it up and running soon.

It's the Mackie CR-1604. They don't even make this model anymore. The power supply is internal.

I still appreciate your advice, though!

Dude, you are too cool. But I meant the advice you already gave me. If I could give you more good rep I would! Thanks!

It's cool...just help the next guy when you get a chance.

Have a Happy New Year!

I'm glad you didn't take my advice! I can offer risky advice living across the other side of the world, and not have to suffer the repercussions!

Putting the bigger fuse in could have been disaterous :D. I had a friend who seriously considered replacing a fuse with a 1" nail, I can't remember if he actually put the nail in or not.

I heard somewhere about a guy who put a bullet in the fuse box in his car. I'm thinkin'...what was he thinkin'?!

Some people's kids :D .

Happy New Year! Have a safe one!

NO!!!!!!

A fuse will only blow when something is wrong. Putting in a oversized fuse will allow whatever short is in there to get worse, and will cause even more damage.

NEVER use anything but the proper sized fuse.

Here's a follow up....

I just got the mixer back from the shop, hooked it back up and it's running fine. A diode in the power supply went bad. Total parts - $2.00. Total labor - $150.00 (2 hours). They cleaned the mute and solo buttons as well as the faders. They also cleaned all 1/4" jacks and inserts, which really needed it!

I must give props to the shop, Pro Tech in Wheaton, Maryland. I took it in on Monday and it was ready yesterday.
