Me and my drummer friend did this in about 2 hours, with him on drums and vocals, me on guitar and bass. The bass playing is a bit off-time (i don't normally play bass), but other than that, any suggestions? im kinda new to this but i'm trying to learn fast. I haven't even had any of my recording equipment more than a month. newbie pride.

listen at www.myspace.com/seraphiliac on the right side there is a player and blitzkrieg bop is the one we are discussing

recorded with yamaha mg16/4 mixer, various mics (audix, blue, sm57, mxl 990), into cubase sx. guitar amp is a 25 watt fender combo, bass amp is 30 watt johnson combo.

The bass would probably be steadier if the drummer wasn't all over the place. Damn, I could drum better when I was 12!

well i dunno if the drummer is the problem. The bass track was a bit rushed, and i did the bass track myself. being a guitar player, i have the fretting technique, but not the best plucking for bass. any thoughts on the sound quality, levels, etc? im mostly wondering about the recording aspect of this track.

also im wondering if there is a way to make my vocals not sound so.....flat....i tried some reverb, but that didnt help really, and if i add anymore it sounds really cheesy.....help!

I'll bne honest.....I listened to this a few days ago then decided not to pass jugement.

The Ramanos made it work in the studi because it was so simple...stereo kit, bass in the left, guitar in the right and vox deadpan down the middle.

I've never heard a 3 chord song played so badly. Shocking!

I'm a newbie around here so you might not want to put much stock in my opinion but...

The bass and snare are WAY too high. I had to struggle to hear the guitar. If you want to cover the Ramones make sure that the guitar kicks you in the nuts.

Also, you loose time between the changes. Try to work on that. You can have all the equipment, knowledge and tricks you want but it's all useless if you can't play the song well.

Keep trying though.

cool...this does help. Sadly nobody i know here knows the first thing about this stuff (i guess i don't really either though.....lol) so everybody i know thinks its great....anyhow..thanks for the insight.

I think having an actual bass player would be an asset. And someone who knows how to sing.

also: This is being done in my den, and right now i only have 1 input on my computer, so i have to set drum levels on my mixer and hope they will work in the mix......is there some way i could do this better (until i get my delta 1010lt....soon)

Drumming was definetely the weakest link in the recording. Way offtime and didn't sound very pleasing. The snare sounded pretty bleh.

This recording is gawd aWFUL!

You had said that you "want to learn recording fast".

That really sums it up right there.

Go spend your money at a real studio.
By the sound of things your time would be better spent by practicing your instruments.

Im not tryin to be cold or cruel but...

Wanting to learn recording fast......?
It just sounds like disrespect to me.

alright...... "fast" wasn't the right word. sorry if i offended. what i meant is that i am trying to do everything i can to learn as much as possible.

not to be rude, but the whole reason i am here is to get better at RECORDING. I cannot afford, nor do i want to go to a professional studio. If nothing else, it would not give me the pride and/or satisfaction when i finally get something good recorded.

well you really are coming off like it. Sorry if my attempt at makin music bothers you.

This is my first song i have ever recorded and mixed, and obviously i have some stuff i need to do better. :( I'm not a middle aged studio engineer, and i have had all of my recording equipment equipment for barely a month.

I understand I may not be any good yet, but how about being a little more constructive, and a little less insulting next time?

oh and on a side note about the drum mixing: I had to mix the drums as 1 stereo track because my sound card only has 1 input (getting a delta 1010lt soon i think). I had to do this in the same room as the drums, and so i guess i screwed up a bit.....although it sounds like this song is trash, so i guess i shouldn't worry about re-tracking/mixing the drums.

Easy there man it's his first attempt. I'm sure your first recording wasn't all that great either.

Why would he go spend money at a studio when the whole point is to LEARN how to do this himself? I've always found that getting your hand in it is the easiest way to learn. Theres a lot of knowledge and creativity that goes into recording and you get most of that from professionals but also from trial and error. Take it easy.

Why is wanting to gain as much knowledge as quickly as possible disrespectful? Sounds to me like he want's to commit himself to learning (remember that's the whole point of this board.) and is willing to put the time in to do that.

We all have to start somewhere right? Keep at it man. Recording is a lot of hard work but it's one hell of a payoff.

Sorry.

It wasnt my intention to kill his spirit.
Its just that when i hear "i want to learn recording fast"
Im reminded of how much time and effort ive put in to get where i am.
And im still a NOVICE.

So i apologise if you got offended.
It wasnt my intention.
This art of recording is no quick learn.
If you respect it, youll take youre time and learn shit right.
With that said, ill put my opinions aside next time i reply on your posts, and be more constructive.

Im usually very helpful, and positive...
:)

finster:

apology accepted, and ill try and be a little more respectful of others' time and effort next time.

with regards to the song: i am gonna redo it as soon as possible, and this time im gonna have my drummer
1)read the frikin drum tabs i gave him
2)listen to the sequenced version i did in fruityloops
3)have him record with a click track (and the fruityloops version)

You know why guitar players keep drumsticks on their dashboards?
So they can park in the handicapped parking spots.

oh and maybe a real bass player this time? hopefully

also finster: just checked out your site. nice studio! do you run that full time or is it just sortof a side thing? the lighting in the photos looks pretty sweet. screams professional.

Yeah i can tend to be overcritical at times.
Ill get too charged up about shit.
You guys just need practice thats all. :)
Ya like the studio pics huh?
Well thanx. I do it full time.
But I fiend to improve at my craft though.

Driven.
