I didn't think I'd be posting this today. I spent most of the day looking for my missing brother in the remote roads of northern Maine, fearing the worst when he wasn't where he should have been this morning. But he turned up unharmed at a friend's house who just didn't answer his phone. My father and I got the relieving call on a cell when we were about 3 1/2 hours from home, terrified. Just take this as a reminder in a world of reminders to hug or show some form of appreciation to the people you love.

The places we are taken sometimes.

Anyway, don't spare me an honest critique just because of that! I'm better now, he's a live and well (well, a bit hung over I hear).

I'll post the lyrics below this link for those who pay attention to that sort of thing. It's all about whether or not Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears will resolve their differences and be a couple again like we all want so badly in our hearts. ya right

Thanks...I always appreciate your time.

Blanket

The eyes are lost in a blanket of fog
Will i fall prey to self pity?

Please forgive me in these indulgent moments
Gradually i've been losing focus of the day
And i feel something like stagefright pulling the blinds tight
My half-thoughts and memories are trapped forever on the stage

Here's my chance now to ascend
Just need the courage to begin
Make a little cut 'round the eyes
So i can dream again
Seems the more i understand, the less that i am able to explain
It's sure to drive me to madness

Don't ever cling to anything

Isn't this the secret... motion, movement, and change?

The eyes are obscured by a blanket of words
I'm tired and obsessed so i cling

Please be patient, i have just caught a glimpse
Of the many ways i could move with confidence and grace
i'll swim through Your ocean, and float on your wind
Tirelessly i must change with unbending intent.

(i know i can be kind of vague sometimes, so in case the imagry eludes you, it's about letting go of what you've had engraved in your mind, and not being afraid to dream and to take chances.)

the acoustic sounds great at the beginning.....i wish it had a touch more presence when the other guits kick in cause it gets lost right away....just preference though.........very interesting vocal effects........kind of like they're being sucked back in.......

the clean electric solo has great tone.....the harmonies are all nice too......

pretty cool sluice

starts out kinda dark...I like that......interesting line with the guitar/synth?......ok; a little power.........backs off......here's the patented SLuiCe vocals....very cool, as usual,.....too many cool things going on to note them all......really, really like the way you stack vocals......at around 3:00 I'm noticing that I'd like the bass a little more solid and distinct.......geez, you are one amazing writer and the way you toss time signatures around while still maintaining a flow is pretty remarkable.

Another good one man......I'll let others dig into the minutae of the mix.....I'm just digging it.

veeerrrrrrrry interesting. I hear Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath in there. The production is impeccable. I think it runs a tad long. Maybe if you broke it up with a double-time part in there...
Definitely not your run-of-the-mill schtuff.
Bravo.

Wow...very nice!!!

Another one for the keepers folder.

Only things that bothered me a little were the hi-hat and kick. I don't know what exactly. Maybe if the hat was backed off a tad in some spots like at about 1:34 and 2:11 andsimilar spots where it really sounds up front to me. I don't know what to say about the kick. I doesn't sound bad...it just doesn't sound right to me.

2:48 kicks ass!!!!

Nice job

Oh...I'm not a big fan of 1:00+ intros, but this is one of the better long intros I've heard. Very interesting.

Very nice work.

Had to make exception time for you dude,...mandatory.

Great opening!I think that was almost metal! Here's the signature oddness, yea that rocks.Whoa!Killer!Scary!Excellent heav-e-eness.I like a meatier guitar, but this works fine.Great unfinished end.Leaves a nice big hole in you.Excellent effect.I don't know if you planned it but...second listen..neat stereo on phones. You get such amazing space in your recordings. No mix complaints.

"bump"...listened to this last night lofi...d/l this morning, love it already...i'll be back:)

it's like a heavy David Bowie.. cool! everything sounds good to me.. The drum sounds are great, although the beats are strange.. nice guitars.. strange tune.. I like it..

I can't comment on much right now because it's 6:18 a.m. and I have absolutely no caffeine in my system..

I'll be back after 2 - 24 oz's..

OK, I'M COMPLETELY CAFFEINED OUT NOW...

those cymbals sound soo real.. love the gated reverb.. Was that the Midiverb 4? You don't hear gated verb often these days.. Lots of dynamic range on this song too.. I think your definitely one of the best guitarists on this board.. I have no nits on this one.. cool song as always!!

I may have a new favorite Sluice tune!

So many different guitar sounds - and they all sound so good. The intro has lots of stuff going on, I had to put the headphones on to catch all the intricacies - nice!

That loud guitar kicking in was powerful. Best dirty tone I've heard from you yet. The palm muting and fret slides sound pristine too.

Some ambitious effects (Pink Floyd "Empty Spaces" like) on the vocals. Good job!

I don't have any comments that could help you improve the mix - you're there.

Only thing I can contribute is a preference thing - I'd love it if you replaced the synth (kicks in around 3:00) with guitar (maybe ebow, feedback, or rubbing the high strings with your pick). You've got such good guitar sounds going that the synth cheapens it to my ears.....but that's just me.;)

Great work as usual, in fact, sounds like a step forward.

As soon as the stream finishes, I'll download it.

Great song! Very interesting and well executed.

This isn't Drumkit From Hell by any chance?

ok.. it's downloading. :) :)

SLuiCe,

Nowbody gets into a song like you do, I mean you seem to become part of it. Pretty corny huh, but true!!

Very interesting song, and great recording.

I second the guitar complement, we may have to start calling you fingus!!

bump for now.....

..must aquire better listening source.......must aquire better listening source......must aquire better listening source.....

Deeply intriguing, this is. The harmonically provoking guitar melody is very cool. Nice sound too.

But I can't comment on this right now. Just heard it for the first time. I'll stick to 'I likey' for now and comment further later on, ok?

Wait, I don't like the hihats...hahaha just kidding.

(although Jagular has a point about the hihat, but I guess we need to 'prove' it by naming what exactly bothers us: it seems too loud or too tight) :D

Very cool, Sluice. I love the whole ball of wax - lots happening and full of suprises - but not suprise for its own sake: it all comes together as *music* (as opposed to just being "interesting").

Only criticism would be to agree with the above comment about the high hat being a little too in your face in a few spots (and possibly a tad clipped?). But I'm digging hard for a criticism there.

great job,
Chris

Very good, wild song. Sort of heavy alterna fusion. The recording sounds great. This reminds me of B. Sabbath's stuff, the sort of creative symphonic rock, with different tempos and sections and moods, and interesting harmonics.

Very impressive!!

Damn, that took a long time to download LOL! Wow Tom, man it takes a while to soak in one of your tunes. I think this will be my favorite...for now:D . It had a "Floyd" vibe for me in a couple places...when it came in hard @2:42 and another time there. Mix sounded great on my deaf ears. Damn fine song Tom,damn fine.

Dude,

Great mix, I just heard a heavey amount of high s through my monitors. Is that just me? otherwise crazy song man , and excellen t recording work.

There's nothing to really complain about with this ditty. There are many elements to it, that you can tell take quite a bit of time to construct, play and record. The effort you put into your stuff really shows to me. It's not just programing some easy sequence into a keyboard workstation and wank away (like I do). The recording chops DO seem pretty much there, all along with even the nice sounds you get on your guitars and even the reverse reverb on the vocals. All really nice stuff....the details.

What I am about to say, may probably draw a lot of flack...maybe not, and hopefully I can say this without being insulting, and get across what I am trying to get out of my brain and put into legitimate words. I agree about comments about you being 'one of the better gtr players' and stuff like that. However, as unothordox as you music is, I am not being blown away by any technical chops. NOW...people will jump all over that statement and say;(or something to the effect) "The notes are just right.... no need to 'Van-Halenize' everything...besides that's been done already....I get tired of constant shredding...etc, etc'
BUT...that is not what I am trying to say. I am talking about something that AS A GUITARIST, I know is a bear to play, and offers some real technical chops. Maybe just the SNIPPIT, four octave arpeggio... some swift-o chord changes, a mind inspiring finger-picked lead section. Now...(I think) I am aware that it takes just as much talant to CHOOSE the correct note, and play it JUST SO, and have that (semi-easy sounding) passage of notes emit all kinds of emotion...blah, blah. Pink Floyd leads come to mind. Current Eric Clapton...less so.
I put people like Leo Kotkee at the top of technical prowess, without blowing notes for notes sake. Pat Metheny to a degree also. I think as a high caliber guitar slinger, you hopefully are understanding what I am trying to say. I CAN hear the "years" of practice on your acoustical "sureness" in the beginning of this song, and the way your notes sound picked with authority...., but if I 'walked away' going... "how the hell did he do that??", I think it would put your music waaaay over the top.

Boy...I hope I stated my thoughts without being insulting, and at least making a smidgen of sense. In all actuallity, that seems to just be the general fault of the clinic. As high caliber (and as we know...in some cases EXTREME high caliber) as some of the stuff is here, it is because of things like Erland's indistiquishable vocals, Sabb's wall-o-sound, Slucie's production and song wizardry, Crawdad's vocal delivery and writing, Macle's "sums it all up recording expertise.... et al... There are NO Jimmy Pages, Steve Vais, John Coltranes... I suppose if there were, they'd be signed and not hanging around here.

anyway...I think the longer I type, the deeper the hole I will dig. But I can only hope you understand what I am trying to say.

oh...btw... mp3clinic rating... of course 10 stars... waaay above the 5 star limit.

Your stuff DOES continue to amaze me, and I must honestly say I am eager to hear something new that you do...as much as I couldn't wait for the newest Hendrix or Doors album to come out, when I was a pup buying vinyl. You (and a couple of others) make this clinic the best find on the net. Congrats for that.

Dude that was excellent. My jaw is still hanging. I loved all of it.
