Me and my band are planning on recording tomorrow, but when I went to playback some older recordings today on my Blackface ADAT, an interesting error occured.

When I put a tape in, the display says that it is in the DATA area, even if the tape is actually in the middle. When I press play, the "play" light flashes instead of holding continually, and the little dot between the minutes and second numbers dissapears. As it plays, it also plays at a slightly faster rate.

When it's playing, no sound comes out of the ADAT and it is no activity bars pop-up.

When trying different tapes, this happens with all of them, and occasionally the tape will show it's correct time (for example, 16.25) but will soon display the incorrect time as the tape plays at a faster rate (without any sound!!!).

This is really bugging me, and I'd appreciate any help that you guys could give. I've looked everywhere for information on what's going on, but have found nothing.

Thanks!

This sounds like it will need servicing... that's not normal behaviour by ANY stretch...!

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was fearing that it was a problem that only a technician could solve, but I have also read that the flashing "play" LED means that a head cleaning is required. I'll probably buy a tape for cleaning tonight and try it just for kicks...

I do seem to remember it doing this before, a while ago, but I know that I was able to get it working again relatively quickly. I just cannot remember what I did!

Tape cleaners are essentially useless -- the only effective method of cleaning ADATs is manually....

Thanks for all the reply's guys! I took said ADAT to my local music store and had the repair guy there clean it for me (I knew that if I did it myself, I'd screw somthing up). It seems to be working now (the repair man said that there seemed to be some sticky stuff on the drum), but it's still getting occasional errors, so the head assembly may be bad. At least it's partially working...

Thanks again for the help!

Eddie, there may have been instructions there two years ago when that link was posted:D
