Hi,
I have two adats one made in 1993 and one in 1995.
The older one has a power supply that runs really hot, there is a heat sink in the supply ( on part nte2399 ) that you cant touch after it has been running for about five minutes.

Has anyone had any experience with this. For all I know it may be normal and something they just changed. Any help is appreciated.

Thx

do you experience any mechanical or operational problems? transport jams, improper control functions, or even the unit shutting down while using the unit? if not its probly a just a revision fluke. shouldnt be anything to worry about. if it does not work properly, the heat you are experiencing may be due to bad caps in the PSU causing a stressed load on the regulator IC which is usually fastened to a heat sink like the one you have mentioned, meaning that there is an unusually high load in the circuit. at this point you will need to have it serviced. hope this helps.

Thx for replying producerkid,
I have no mechanical problems with the adat. It does get so hot inside the chassis that it will trigger the error indicator light.

I am suprised the regulator will hold up under that temp.

Thx

you could try some non conductive freeze spray, and spray it on the heatsink to keep it cool, and see if you still get the error message, that is kind of strange the problem you are having. have you tried emailing alesis tech support?

adat power supply

Hello again,
what I was doing is just running a fan to circulate air and keep it cooler. I shorted something out while checking some voltages and its not working right now. Think I just blew a resistor.

Hope I just blew a resistor.

Alesis have been pretty useless in the past for getting back to me, I call a repair place in vancouver for advice when im at a total loss.

I do know that my later supply does not have the nte2399 at this point in the circuit. They changed it to a FS7TM.

Thx for replying

hmmm....

just a quick thought. did you get the adat in question used? if so, it may have been repaired before. an NTE part is usually a sub part, and i dont think it would have come from the factory like that. if so, beats me. lol. maybe you could get the original part from a supply place like MCM or DigiKey. the NTE part may not have been exactly what the circuit requires, or was not built to the correct tolerences. this happens a bit with NTE parts. somewhat the same as replacing an original amplifier IC in a power amp with the NTE equivilant which i have seen overheat and blow out before. i used to work at an electronics repair shop and i cant tell you how many cases ive seen of this.

not the end all, but a definate possibility. hope ive been of some help, please let me know if and when you get your problem solved.

Thx producer kid,
i actually think youve probably just solved the problem here.
The FS7TM does seem hard to find, the nte 2399 is given as a sub for it. I concluded that what looked like work having been done was probably from the excessive heat at this point in the circuit.

I compared the power supplys i have and apart from this part they are exactly the same.

Now to track down the original ( I hope ) part. You probably save me the trouble of replicating my original problem and then having to solve it again.

Thx for the help
