I am new to the whole idea of recording, and have been doing research, but much of it does not help me, as I want a certain type of sound. Basically, I play raw Black Metal. I am starting off with an RR5 Rhoads guitar, a great amp, a great pedal, mic, and good computer.
My biggest problem is this: I am not sure what type of recorder/mixer I need to buy. Obviously, I want at least 8 tracks as I am alone in this project, and budget is not a problem; I have been saving enough money now to buy all the best stuff. The thing is...do I want the best? Do I even want a digital recorder? I am looking for a raw and unperfect sound, so the best quality is not necessary, but at the same time "Nattens Madrigal" which was recorded on a 4 track tape recorder might be a little too limited for me. I play in the Vein of early Norwegian black metal, not modern day "death metal" style. I want a recorder which will give me a semi-static sound if I want it, but will not limit me entirely to bad production; nor do I want something that only produces perfect recordings (which I cannot stand). I need versatility, not perfection. If I could hear the quality that each recorder produces, this would be a lot easier, but I can't do that. I am somewhere in the middle.
Mixers - I know nothing about this, and as long as I get what I need to have all the songs balanced out decently I will be happy: again, perfection is not the goal.
Drums. Yes, I can play them, but there is no way I am buying drums. Any advice on what I should get here? A drum machine? Some other piece of crazy equipment?
Lastly - The setup. Websites are quick to give advice on what equipment to buy, but not on what components and cables are needed, and how they hook up. This is vital; I live in the middle of nowhere and am using a friend's card to get my stuff online. This is a one shot deal; so I need all the extra little things at the same time. I do not want to record right to the computer; I want a seperate recorder.... then I will load the tracks unto the PC and maybe mix then burn to disk. Starting from the guitar itself.. what cables do I need and where do they go? Do I plug right into the Recorder? Do I go through the pedal and amp first? How does the recorder hook into my PC? Etc...
Any help on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
