Hey, y'all. I'm gonna get a digi 003 and pay big to get the signature mod. I'm gonna go awhile without buying an outboard pre, because I figure those black lion pres are good enough for my ears. Money isn't really an issue though, so if I oughta get a preamp, I will. What can ya tell me?

My friend got his 002 done.

He's happy, and can tell the difference.

The pres in the 003 are decent, they don't color the sound at all so you are getting a "true" sound, and I have never used the black lion mod, but I wouldn't suggest it because wouldn't that void your warranty on the 003

I had thought about warranty, as a reason to not get it done on my Project Mix I/O.

My friend who has the 002 reminded me, the warranty is only 1 year anyhow, so... might as well just do it.

I don't know how long the warranty is on the 003's.

The warranty is also 1 year for the 003's.

In the posters first post he says money is not much of an issue. If this truly is the case ... don't tinker with the black lion pre's. You may as well buy some boutique pre's with that money. Then go into the DI's on the 003. You can get much nicer pre's than the black lion mod will give you. So ditch the mod and go with some nice pre's. Good luck, eric:)

good idea. i don't know why I hadn't thought of that

the black lion mod also changes the word clock not just the pre's. On the 003 there is a plug for a word clock if you want to use another one, on the 002 there isn't that option.

Making the mod also negates any chance of taking part in the Digidesign exchange programme.

I really don't see the point in doing it.

I was just going to say that as well. It may be worth while just for the word clock.

I am thinking about having my Project Mix I/O done, and I already own Universal Audio Pre's, and am ordering Daking's.

My friend who has his done unfortuantely has hammered with Duty Fee's and Taxes. (We live in Canada). So... having shipped his Digi to Chicago (or wherver Black Lion is), when it arrived back after the mod, he had to pay duty as if he had just bought the unit new.

Just FWIW, if you're planning on doing a nice studio and money is no object, if you want (IMHO) the best conversion possible for a PT system (probably including HD), get a FireBridge and an Apogee AD-16. You'll have 16 channels of awesome Apogee conversion at 24-bit, 96k going in. You'll only have two channels coming out, though, so if you need more you would need another interface. Maybe a Presonus Digimax FS-8 for 8 outputs at 96k or if you wanted 16 outs and, again, great conversion, the DA-16 could come to your rescue. :)

Just FWIW. I personally think this setup would be hard to beat if you're planning on doing a full-on studio. Maybe not if you're just playing around, though.

One last note: The only difference between M-Powered and LE is that you can't do the video stuff with M-Powered. The video add-on packs are LE only. Other than that, they are exactly the same and work with PT HD absolutely fine. :)
