I'm posting this because I'm sure a ton of people will be interested. If you haven't heard of them (Black Lion Audio) google them up. They do upgrades on a lot of stuff, probably best known for upgrading MOTU interfaces.
So it's not on their website yet but I had a pm conversation with one of their guys (Matt) and asked a few questions. Here is what I learned:

Hey Chris--
Sure, I'll tell you about the 1010 mod. At this point, we're only working with the analog ins and outs. The basic design of the unit is pretty decent, it's just limited by some of the component choices. I'd actually put it a step above the 002 because it doesn't have all of the RF issues that need to be sorted out. Funny, since it's about 1/2 the price.
With better analog stages in the 1010, you'll get a much smoother, fuller, more wide open sound. Really, I hate to kill off the potential of a trade here, but this might be the better route for you to go. That 1010 has way better converters in it than the 828mk2 does.

(I asked about the 828 having the same converters as Apogee stuff)
The 828mk2 has AKM converters, that's true. But it uses an A/D stage with 107dB dynamic range, and a D/A with 114dB dynamic range. The 1010 has AKM's as well, but its A/D has 110dB dynamic range, and its D/A has 120dB dynamic range. They are the exact same converters used in the 002.
With the modified MOTU units, the two big reasons for improvement is the analog stages and the clock. The analog stage mods get rid of all the hazy, murky sound. The same is true for the 1010. The haze is completely eliminated, and the sound becomes much clearer.

Well, the modified 828mk2 has both clock and analog, whereas the 1010's clock isn't finished yet, so some aspects of the modified 828mk2's sound are better for now--it has a much more focused punch to it. We still have to work on sorting out PCI noise issues for the clock we've designed for the 1010, and we're waiting on a custom part that we had to order. The full package for the 1010 (clock and analog) won't be available until late September. We'll be offering the analog stage stuff within the next few weeks.
With clock, the modded 1010 will blow that [LynxTWO] out of the water, no question. Without the clock, I'd say it's probably a step under the Lynx. We've been able to get the fully modified 002's and MOTU 896's on par with Apogee and Mytek stuff, and I can't see why the 1010 would be any exception.

So there's some info on the 1010 upgrade.
