Don't get the wrong Idea from the subject, it's the name of the song...

:D

Here are some notes that I'm planning to get agreement on,

1. Vocals need to be re-tracked ( we used an sm-57, through a tascam mkIII then into a cheesy stock sound card, AND we used a towel as a pop filter! )

2. Drums are mechanical. I'm working on making them slighty less fruitylooped :D.

3. The guitars are sloppy...what can I say, I suck.

Bob Crenshaw - Vocals, Drum Programming
Alright I'm done!

Good tune I think your'e a bit hard on yourself about the playng, it sounds generally quite good. The drums sound a bit 'sparkly' compared to the rest but I dont think i would say they were necessarily mechanical. The voice sounds great for this style, nothing worse than some pathetic little voice over this kind of rock track, and this guy sounds like he can really give it some. I tend to agree that a better vocal recording with a bit more detail and compression would improve it.
Overall I think you've done a good job with it

Hey, this is a cool track. Get rid of the towel, and vocals will improve quite a bit...they're already strong, just need a little more presence in the mix. Your guitar playing is fine, suits the material. Mix had a pretty good balance to my ears.

Sounds pretty good to me!
The snare seems to have to much high end,and too loud.

Guitar playing was fine, and the vocals fit real well.

"AND we used a towel as a pop filter! "

Just do what everyone else around here does, steal one of your ma's stocking and a coat hanger!:D

Good luck.

Best to you,
Pete

Not sure if I'm repeating anyone, but how about some vocals? I'm guilty as well.

I hear a lead in there somewhere, that should be up where the vocal should also be.

Keep going.

I'd follow the advice on makeshift pop filters. An ordinary nylon does a fine job.

In addition to being a bit muffled by the towel, the vocals are a bit back in the mix. I'd bring them up - I actually think the chorus to the song would sound quite good if the vocals came through. had a good melody through that part.

The drums are a bit high in the mix. The high hat comes through pretty strong.

I'd have to listen closer, but it seems to me the guitars aren't sloppy. Maybe the part is not too adventureous, but it seems played ok.

Wow...I'll say this. That vocal is great. A little distant, perhaps, but if I were recording that vocal, I'd probably stand about 40 ft. away from the mic too, for fear of annihilating it. So you used a towel? You probably could have used a mattress for a pop filter without too much interference.

(hat = darned loud)...left ear hurts.

Did I mention that the vocal was great.

Thanks for this,
Chris

Thanks for all of the replies! I am going to adjust the drums ( I'll bring the whole kit down and see what that does.
The singer isn't immediately available for re-tracking so I'll try to mix-fix his levels.

I guess I say the guitar playing is sloppy cause I'm hard on myself, thanks for the motivation.

I'm going to make the panty-hose pop filter as soon as I can get ahold of some pantyhose... :D

Again, thanks for the listens!

I'll leave mix comments to the others.

Cool tune... love the heavy vibe. This one will RAWK when you're done with it!

I have uploaded a revised version of the song, I addressed the drum programming problem with a level decrease of about 2 db and I bumped up the vocals throughout by about 3 db, it's beginning to sound better, but the vocals still need to be retracked with a LDC and a "real" mic pre...but hey, whatchagonnado?

Hope ya like it!

I'm not finding a song there. ?????

I apoligize.

I forgot to convert my wav to mp3, and tried to upload it. Needless to say, that didn't work.

But it's there now.

Sounds pretty good to me man. The vocals are definitely buried too much. The towel muffles things too much. The bass sounds good....nice definition.......the hi-hats too loud.....the playing is fine....I wouldn't be so critical of your playing. The vocals sound ok too.....they're just too muffled. Good work!

Thanks for the listen Lt. Bob.

Right now I'm reworking the drum tracks by themselves.. I rolled off the higher frequencies of the hats and snare slightly and added about 4% reverb to the snare.

I've reduced the volume of the hats a tad ( around 4% ) and I'll be reinserting them into the rest of the song and see how that evens things out.

As far as vocals go I'm going to try to eq the track a little at a time to add a bit of air ( high end??? ) and see if that helps it punch through a bit.

I'll post again when the next version is ready for evaluation. :)
BTW this is great, you guys are a LOT of help.

sounds pretty good to me. do you have access to any compression for the vocal? that might help level out the volume of it (tends to fade back in some spots)

have fun buying that ld mic and preamp!

I have already used software compression, ( cakewalk effect ) on the vocals and all the tracks. The vocal was recorded poorly ( it was clipping the soundcard ), and we didn't bother to fix it. The original project wasn't supposed to be this good. :)

Thanks for listening.

BTW
I'm about to order a M-Audio Delta 1010 interface! whoo!

good song, i really like this style!!!!!!!!! heavy baby got's ta have it!!

peace

yo this shit rocks yo!!!
I am not sure if it is the towel but the vocals are a bit buried, I cant complain though because vocals are the hardest thing to make sit good in the mix IMHO. I have used the homemade Mamas stocking and hanger pop filter and it works Great!!!
I like the axes and I have no problem with the drums

Turn it UP MUTHA!!!
The King

Thanks for listening!

I'm probably just going to buy a pop filter, seeing as I live with my father, and I'm already a gear whore. :D

( i'm going to get a blue tube pre and an audio buddy pre :) )

:)
