Man!! Its too bad all that tape is no good. What are the odds of every reel in that box being shite?
Do you think none of it could be good at all.?

The likelihood that the tape from that era and in that auction being or going sticky is 100%. It’s a real brain buster because they look so nice and new and pretty. If it were food it would be recalled. It looks fine... until you eat it and get sick. I know it’s a shame and you wish it were not so, but it is. We all wish it were not so. :(

Trust me, if I didn’t know better I would jump on that deal in a heartbeat. 40 reels for $100.00 is a super deal, and 406/407 is one of my favorite tapes of all time.

By the way, looks like some poor bastard outbid tapeandtape. Well, be careful out there pilgrims. The bidder has over 8000 feedback so is likely a professional seller buying it to resell a reel or two at a time.

Well, it's pretty well known that before Quantegy took over (pre late 1994 but to be safe pre 1995), many back-coated US made tapes, incl Ampex (since about mid 70's) switched to and used a binder which came to bite them in the ass eventually. It broke down, whether the tape was used, unused, sealed and what not. They used the same recipe throughout so ALL of the tapes have the bad binder. I've learned a lot of the stuff from Tim (Beck) and his "Sticky Shed Help" thread is a must read.

EDIT: Ooops, sorry Tim, we posted on the same minute. :D

$3.50 total for a new box and 7" reel isn't too bad a price really, if you went into this with open eyes and I have a damn lot of tape on pancakes. But sadly some poor schmuck is going to pay $20 a reel for crap.
