Hi, i have a small home setup and i use it mainly to record my band but also school gcse and soon a level work. Its PC based. I use a Behringer UB1832FX-Pro mixer which i have had absalutly no problems but it is getting a bit small. I reccently got enough mics to record a whole drum kit but as their are only 6 mic channels on my mixer, its not leaving me any room to record a whole band at once. Would you recommend that i buy a larger mixer like the
Behringer SL2442FX-Pro
http://www.behringer.com/SL2442FX-PRO/index.cfm?lang=ENG
or...
should i buy some monitors. At the moment i am simply using one philips home cinema amp running 2 speaker stereo and... a second home cinema setup in the adjacent room (where the playing takes place) in 5.1 . I know you can;t really mix with home cinema speakers but i do use sennheiser wireless headphones aswell. What do you recon i should get? What is more important.
Thanks for any help
Please ask any questions if it will help to come up with a recommendation.

i would definetely buy studio monitors at first to hear your productions.

As example - Look at the Wharfedale pro diamond thread here !!

Ok, so how about an Alesis RA 150 with some tannoy reveals? Or should i go active and get some warfedale 8.1s? Thanks for the help

i would by passive monitors when i have an very good amp. --> as example Hafler !!
Ok alesis isn´t bad but i would go with an active monitor.

you should go out and hear them. The 8.1´s are ok but have not enough bass. The price difference with the 8.2´s isnt great.

which when ok

don't know your equipment or rooms but..
headphones are no good to mix/tracking with. I have many
ASS sounding recordings to prove this theory!

monitors are said to be "possibly the most important piece"
per a George Martin recording book.
no head-phoneys, for the Eng. behind the glass.
it's the Eng who has to set the tones using monitors, as i understand it.
(and tell the musicians to quite fhkng with the treble knob!!
it sounds like sht and doesn't sit in the mix!)
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
maybe you can split some cost$$?
acquire a decent set of Passive Ref monitors & keep your amp?
KRK ST8's? YSM1's, TAnnoy...on,on.

decent hifi amps, discrete components for ex.
high wattage, 4ohm/8ohm, are great.
KEY WORD: DECENT AMP= some pump to it.

+if your amp has a Tone circuit "bypass" switch??
bypass the tone/preamp circuitry going direct to amp section.
+ FIBER OPTIC DIGITAL IN'S straight to the amp section!!
slick?yes. one less D/A conversion!!
+HiFi also offers a patch bay function
+HIFI also offers speaker A/B etc..
+Passive Monitors are about 1/2 price.

Leaving some $$ to the mixer downpayment.
or some $$ for room acoustics?? bass traps? FOAM?

do the blindfold test...let your ears do the deciding.

gearlust. :)
