Does anyone know how they go about recording those big gang background vocal yells? The big "Hey"'s and "Yeah" kind of shouts that were more prominent in the kinda glam rock days? ala 'Primal Scream' by Crue, Skid Row, Def Leppard, etc....

Thanks,
Ryan

Try a few people singing with some chorus and maybe a little delay. Just my guess.

Ahh the days of big hair. Most of that yelling was acheived by stacking tracks. Use of small delay times works if you don't have enough open tracks to work with. Basically it is acheivied by doing a comp track in mono or stereo. just remember Pyromania had something stupid like 140 guitar tracks running. So don't get depressed if your yell isn't as big as you want it the first time. Try different distances from the mic or various amounts of delay. If you use delay you will probably find that 20 ms will the longest time for that application. Good luck!

Call my old girlfriend, WANDA @ Bigalow 444-8000 and ask her why she sings off key --- get recorder ready --- listen for her yells --- record --- no charge. [Hang up quick.]
