Mr. Moon

Force of Naked
A bud of mine is suggesting that I try a Beyer m69 to mic my guitar cabs. I have heard some of the tunes off one of his released CD's which he used the m69's to mic his cabs, and the guitar tone is to die for, sounding just like his cabs do when you're standing in the room! He used to use 57's, but found that they didn't record his guitar faithfully, and he's one of those very picky guitar tone types who needs to have it just right. Needless to say that my interest in one of these babies is pretty high right now... ;)

As I cannot find any local dealers that carry these things in stock and the only way they'll order one is if I purchase it, I'd like to get some opinions before moving on it. I searched the forums here and found some good info on the Beyer m88, but nothing on the m69 that really helps.

Any/all comments about anyone's experience(s) with this mic would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

i wouldnt hesitate if i were you. it is a very "safe" microphone purchase. buy it used and you can always get most of your money back.

basically it is in the family of the beyer m88 (less low end). it may even have the same capsule??? (anyone????). therefore it is a renowned vocal mic as well as just a solid dynamic mic to have around the studio. the magic with this line happens because of a nice solid bottom end with a really cool top. definately more hi-fi than a 57. full of mojo as well.

i am a huge fan of beyerdynamic mics, own and have owned and used a few (beyer m160, m260, m88, m201, m380). although i have never used an m69, if i had an excuse i would buy one in a minute. i have never heard a beyer mic that i didnt like a WHOLE LOT. in fact i have been periodically bidding on m69s on ebay looking for a lowball score.

basically, if you buy an m69 you will get a world class vocal mic, a great snare mic, and of course a cool guitar cab mic. all for under $100 used.

go for it.

Beyer mics are underestimated mics, I have three M201's, an M69, an M88 and an M260.

The M69 is the brother (sister?) of the M88, which has more low, but also more high.

A really great dynamic, very versatile mic, great on vocals, snare, toms, floor, horns. Not as great as the M88, but close.

Thanks Han and eeldip!!

My bud was telling me that he thinks the m69 is a bit better for micing guitar cabs because it has less low end than the m88; a flatter overall reponse. He also has an m88 and has tried both for recording guitar cabs, he says that the m69 records the guitar sound better (as in, more realistically) while the m88 hypes the low end a bit more adding a bit more coloration than the m69.

I'm really looking for my "go to" guitar cabinet mic. Right now I use a 57, and I find it not exactly what I want. Of course, I'll keep the 57 regardless of whatever else I get, but I just want to find a mic that will record the cab a little bit more as I hear it than the 57 does.

Thanks!

"misunderestimated", that's even better!

And Mr Moon, the M88 is also great on guitar cabs, depends on the sound of the speaker. For metal guitars I like them both. Another great mic is the Sennheiser MD421 or MD441. The 421 is less rejective to the M69 or M88, which are hyper cardioids and have a huge proximity effect. If you put the M88 a little further from the speaker it will sound great, a very tight sound that will fit very nicely in your mix.

The MD421 has a little more 'air' in it's sound, especially the MKII. It sounds not as tight as the Beyers, but very nice too, it'll smoke the 57 on guitars (IMHO).

The M69 was my most recent purchase.

Used on snare and guitar cabs a one vox track.

Smoother than the SM57 with less grit and a little more low end.

Works real good closer to the center of the cone IMO.

On a particular track I did for this last project (which I'm still mixing uhhg) the M69 was used for all of the distorted rythm tracks but a 57 micd solo provided the perfect contrast.

Its also a pretty hot mic .... level wise.

Its got a real tight pattern too which helped keep the hats from over-bleeding into it when I set it up an snare duty.

Looks like it could be tougher than a Boss DS1 pedal. :)

Try here for the 201:

I just got the lowest quote for a new M69 that I could find from Full Compass! ...Might have the M69 sooner rather than later! They even take mic returns!! (up to 7 days from receipt of mic without any restocking fee!!)

I have an M69 that I use from time to time.

It's not a bad mic to have around. I'm not amazed by it or anything -- It has kind of an annoying midranginess to it that doesn't work as well for most vocals as I would like. And the pattern isn't nearly as "hypercardiod" as it would claim to be, so it's not as useful on drum micing as you'd think.

It's a decent alternative / change of pace to have around, and you can usually get them cheap on ebay.

For the most part, though, I think the Beyer 201 does everything the M-69 does (and they sound similar) . . . only better.

Also, for what you're describing, I really think you and your buddy should check out an old electrovoice -- if you don't mind really old mics, that is. :D The RE-15 and the EV-666 are kind of exactly as you describe; very natural sounding and less exaggerated bass. And they go a step further by greatly reducing most of the proximity effect you'd get with the Beyers (or most other dymacs for that matter).

i dunno what you are getting from full compass, but these are the musicians-gear.com prices

M 69 TG 176.93 USD
M 88 TG 267.96 USD
M 201 TG 161.59 USD

Pretty much exactly the same for the m69 from Full Compass. (Shipping & insurance cost is $12.00 to my area)

Oh golly, in my experience the M201 is a totally different mic from the M69.

Tru the M201 on vocals for example.:D
