I've recently scooped a Beyerdynamic M500 from ebay. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some specifications for this mic. I know they have a reputation for being fairly tough ribbon mics with a frequency curve similar to a midrange presence peak vocal microphone, but I'm also wondering about ohms, sensitivity and max. SPL.

I'm thinking about using the M500 to mic electric guitar amps. Any idea how much punishment this mic can safely handle?

I believe the Beyer website has documentation for all of their discontinued products.

I've done a search at the website for M500n - no results. A search for M500 pulls up a completely different product.

From a pdf I pulled from the net a few months back:

Micro BEYER M500
· Variantes : M500N = DIN, M500C = XLR ; M500NC = XLR + switch ON/OFF
· Histoire : les version N et NC coexistaient en 1981, les versions 500 ohms sont sans doute plus anciennes

Miking amp speakers is a common application for these mics. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ribbon mics will let you know by distorting when you're stressing them too hard.

i have a friend with an m500 that has a broken ribbon,
any one know who would replace it??? (the ribbon)

(sorry for the hijack) :D

Giraffe,

I hijack threads all the time, so don't feel too bad about it. You're still talking about the same mic, so at worst I might give you a rep point.

I've read about the Stephen Sank 560 DX mod, using RCA ribbon stock. Apparently it lowers the output of the mic and changes the sound. Many people prefer the Sank modded Beyers, and the mod runs around half the price of getting Beyer to do it. I have absolutely no idea how to get in touch with Mr. Sank, but I think there's people here who do.

How did your friend end up with a broken ribbon?

don't know, he's an older guy, and he just decided to start making some home demos and pulled it out of the box.
it didn't work so he had me look at it, broke in half.

I have a 500n and was condidering sending it to Stephen Sank. I talked with him and he is a super cool dude. It's a $125 for the mod (seems like a deal to me) but it will take a while

He warned of a pretty substatial change in sound and suggested I may want to consider that before sending. I have been trying it out stock so far and its not an everyday use sounding mic.

Very peaky. Can be shrill on some things. But can make whatever you put it on really jump out of a mix .... makes a good 2nd or 3rd mic on guitar cabs, even an only mic .... but I wouldnt put it anywhere I might put an SM57.

Its the one of the most colored sounding mics I own and I kinda like it like that. Maybe I will send it if I get another one.

Snow lizard, have you taken the grill off yet???
If not I would twist off the top part of the ball screen and inspect the foam on the inside of the grill for deterioration. Mine was disintegrating and getting all in the ribbon.
Also the block that hold the riboon on mine was loose and it fell out of place while trying it as an overhead ..... :o

So if you bought it used (I assume you did since no documentation) I would just inspect the ribbon if you haven't already.

Yeah, I took a look at it - the foam was crumpled up and sitting on top of the arched screen on top of the ribbon block. Doesn't look like anything's deteriorated. I've fitted the foam back to the grill properly. Everything looks good. I've plugged it in and tested it briefly on voice and it seems to work ok.
