Hello,
I just got a pair of beyer m160 and one m500 they are all ribbon mics with hypercardiod pattern and sound lovely!
I just whant go "better save than sorry" and ask anyone with expirience with these mics a question:
I heard that alot of (mainly american) engineers use this mics to capture gtr amp sound (I heard that also jimmy page is allways recorded with m160 on his amp), my question is how loud the amp can be and how close it could be placed to the amp grill without blowing the fragile ribbon?
thanx

Ask Harvey, or go ask Fletcher...
They can be blown by just slamming the lid on the box too hard. Crazy shit.
Buy em new? How much? Try the 500 on snare, heard great things about it, and try the 160's as overheads through a real good preamp.

Sorry for breaking in on this thread.

Tube, since I've never tried an M160 myself but love the sound of the recordings I've heard made with it, I'm considering getting one. But isn't its pattern too tight for drum overhead recording? Or do you simply get far enough away? I'm thinking of getting one together with an M130 for M-S.

Cheers

Also, make sure you have phantom power off when you connect and disconnect the mic cables. Also your cables are in perfect condition, especially if you have to use them with phantom on.

enjoy!

Crazy shit, all right...
The Beyer ribbon mics are very rugged compared to other ribbons like the RCA's, Coles, etc....that's one of their strong points....
They are not as durable as SM57's or EV666's, but you can use them for stage mics (I love them onstage for fiddles, for example), or for recording loud amps (It's the Hendrix Electric Ladyland amp mic--loud enough?)...
Try the M500 on female vox...one of my favs...

The Beyer should be fine but if you are worried throw a pop filter in front of it to displace the force . I use a Royer R121 and for instruments or anything else, not much beats a ribbon. Just be careful with the phantom. 1x is all it takes to forget and off o be reribboned. I think ozraves on HC uses the 160 or 260, you may try there. Blue Bear I think also uses these. Peter
