I just picked up a Beyer Dynamics M500 mcrophone to record trumpet, as the Behringer B1 was sounding pretty dull. All I can say is WOW! the difference is amazing! I can back way off on the trumpet, but hear a nice bright sizzle in the sound.

Now, I have a couple of questions:

1. I am using a Behringer MIC2200 pre-amp, and I am having to turn the gain way up for the ribbon mic. Is this OK?

2. Can anyone suggest a not too expensive alternative pre-amp for the M500? I am hooking it into a Echo Layla24/Cakewalk Sonar Homestudio set up.

Thanks!

Robin.

Yup. It's a ribbon mic and requires more gain than your typical dynamic or condensor.

While I haven't used either one, the Studio Projects VTB-1 (72db) or the Rane MS1-B (66db) should work fine, although you will still need to crank them.

I have several M500s and they are great mics. I typically use them with Millennia and API pres, but those are more $$.

Enjoy the mic!

I really like the sound of the Peavey PV8 on my Nady ribbon. It really brings out the mic's natural character without adding noise. I'm guessing your Behringer pre adds a good bit of noise, right? :D

As I only have the Behringer pre-amp at present, I am not sure what level of noise is occurring. I do have a SP VTB1 on the way now, so I will find out when I hook it up to that.
