Beware of Vista!

I had to purchase a new PC this week--my old one was acting up--would accept the reformat discs and then the motherboard died. It's cheaper to buy a new computer than to replace the motherboard and the OS disc. Unfortunately, this happened the week before the release of Vista and all the stores locally (Best Buy, OfficeMax, and OfficeDepot) had to send back all the PCs with WinXP because of OEM licensing agreements with Darth Gates pursuant to the release of Vista. So my only option was to wait for the PCs to be released with Vista. Vista is a pain in the rear--and is not compatible with any of the home recording/editing software I have. :mad: Ptui! Ptui! Ptui! on Bill Gates!
 
I had a funny feeling it was going to be like that. I have my original copy of XP on standby. Vista will be full of bugs like all the windoze crap is when it first comes out. XP was an exception, but damn.

I guess most of us home rec'ers will be switching to linux or Mac... :(
 
I wouldn't advise Linux. None of the software for mixing/mastering have Linux`compatible versions. Win emulators for Linux don't work. Linus Torvalds (the self-proclaimed "genius" who "invented" Linux) is as big a fraud as Bill Gates.
 
Actually Linux is a very good platform for a DAW machine if you optimize the kernel correctly have some sense in choosing which sound apps to run (ARDOUR being a personal favorite). Takes a bit of getting used to if you're not used to a Linux-based workstation, but get it streamlined and it will never fail you.

I'm kind of curious how you came to the 'fraud' conclusion given that Linux was started as a hobby and not a commercial product, but that's beside the point.

It is possible to use Linux for this, but it isn't much fun, chiefly owing to the fact that there are no commercial audio apps for it at the moment.
I'm currently using Rosegarden for MIDI playback since SMPTE lockup actually works - unlike the version of SONAR I was using - but I'm still relying on SONAR for the actual composing since the interface is much nicer.

So unless you're either very driven or already skilled with Linux, the mac is probably a better bet. Indeed, if there was a Mac port of SONAR, I'd buy one like a shot.
 
I put a new mobo with 1G RAM in my desktop for <$150. Thanks, Newegg!

When I booted it, Windows said something was very different. I put in the CD and had it repair XP. It looked it removed the OS and reinistalled without touching any other files. All the updates took a long time, but it wasn't all that bad a process.

I'm curious to what software won't work on Vista. I ran the beta version (though it sucked horribly), I was able to run Sonar, Nuendo, Reason, Samplitude & Pro Tools with no flaws other than hardware issues with drivers etc.. Pro Tools was the only one that worked with hard ware because of their beta drivers they released to us.

This is in the Fostex forum because :confused:

Did you actually thoroughly test your hardware/software with Vista, or are you just making a statement based on what you've read are incompatibilities? Not accusing, just asking.

So in theory (your theory), anyone that was a leader, inventor, etc. in computing technologies is a fraud? :rolleyes:

Why do you even bother with it all? Maybe since we're in the Fostex forum, a standalone Fostex digital multi-track would be a better option for you. ;)

There's 2 Repair options usually found on windows xp. What you mentioned is the second repair option, which basically overwrites all windows files & deletes unnecessary files that were either corrupted etc that is keeping windows from running properly without touching any programs, or other files. . The first repair option allows you to enter the command prompt and fix it there. Which is sometimes the best bet. A lot of blue screens of deaths can be repaired by going to the command prompt, finding system, and renaming the file to system.old & rebooting.
 
big whoop. buy a vista machine, format the drive, and reinstall xp. case closed.
 
Actually Vista is a much superior OS but like already stated here, most companies don't support it yet since it's new. Once Vista has the proper support and has been out for 1/2 a year or more it may be a realistic option.

Like the person above me said, buy whatever computer you want just wipe the drive and reinstall with an xp disk.

To emulate most windoze programs these are necessary pre-installed

Wine can be used or for the begiiner Codeweavers Crossover might be easier.

Anything I have emulated is more efficient, stable and even with the alsa drivers the audio is better than windoze..

The learning curve and complexities of linux can be intimidating. At first I was trying to find stuff that did what windoze does Now Im trying to find stuff that linux does.. Windoze is limited it is unstable it costs and all the software costs money.. Linux is unlimited open source and totally free It continues to expand where windoze costs with each update...
 
Get a Mac!

I got a Mac iBook, G4 for a business I had started, it tanked. So I was 'stuck' with a iBook. I started to mess around with GarageBand. OMG! What an amazing program. It was pre-installed. For what it is, a home hobbiest program, well I can't say enough.
Here's an interesting fact: NIN recorded "Hand that feeds" or whatever that songs called, in GarageBand.

Two things tho, maybe three, the volume/imput sliders are not very precise, and the iBook doesn't have an audio in port, you need a USB adapter. Or a PowerBook.

Sorry, Fostex types, I know, off topic of Fostex. I was in a band years ago that used one. Good product.

On the other hand, Bill Gates can byte me!
 
I cut my recording teeth on a Fostex, but the most impressive thing I've seen about them in years is that they still have a whole forum devoted to them here.
