Better than a pedal

I just got my strat back from Carruthers. It already has the EMG buckers but I asked John to put a mid-boost on it. EMG makes one for about 50 bucks. For another 29 bucks labor John bolted it in. I use the middle pot to roll in the juice. It is active on all the pickup settings. I feel it does what the Zvex clean boost pedal does but even better. Much better. Talk about front-loading my little tube combo. The tone becomes Extremely sensitive and dependent on your pick attack and guitar pot volume. Now I have wonderful, wonderful, wonderful clean channel gain with no tube screamer. Of course the Screamer is helped as well. Can't wait for my KLON to get here in 9 more weeks.

My other strat already gots one but it's set up as a dedicated slide guitar with high action and .012 guage.

Don't bother getting this mod with anything other than all-tube machine. Please post back with other testimonies of great free gravy tone if you've made similar mod.

Happy Friday.

Yeah. Using high output pickups does wonders. Adding additional mid boost really accentuates the "wonk" of an amp. I especially love a mid-driven Marshall tone.

I haven't done your mod myself. Still use a tubescreamer when necessary, but haven't needed that for a while either. Often go straight with a SD humbucker equipped ESP Custom through the PSA-1. Have also used the high output EMG-81 through tube amps, nice tone.

I hear that EMG-81's are killer for hard distortion. Metallica uses EMG's and so does Zakk Wylde.
