I've been trying to use a Boss MT-2 (metalzone) pedal, for the purpose of recording. It has been suggested that this pedal is less than desirable for this purpose.

What distortion pedal/effects processor does everyone else use? I have a tube amp (ampeg vt120 w/sovtek's), but the distortion sounds exceedingly weak and crappy from it. I do metal-ish music 50% of the time, and this is where my dilemma lies...

I like mine. It's lots o' fun. I think the mid eq makes it pretty versatile. I guess it depends on what kind of sound you are going for. It won't sound like a fully driven half stack, but it has some cool sounds, if you ask me. It seems to me that I get better results if I back off some lows, don't dial out all the mids, and use less gain than you think. The big mid scoop full gain thing sounds cool through an amp, but you need some mids and less gain to tape to get the same sound.

do you like the sound coming out of your amp when you use the pedal?

if not then, yes, you'll probably want something else. although i haven't heard many pedals that can get you a "metal" sound. most of those tones are done through the amp.

if you like the sound coming out of the amp then it might just be a case of mic placement.

I "like" it, though I'm not sure I love it, if that makes sense!

I guarantee that I won't like the sound coming out of it if I CRANK the mids, as has been recommended numerous times...
Must be a necessary evil though.

Have you tried using yer pedal to increase the imput volume and let the amp overdrive more? still no tone? distortion pedals I've found don't make yer sound bigger, but smaller. Rat pedals have always treated me pretty good. Though, I haven't gone through enough to be an expert.

check out www.analogman.com ... he does good mods to pedals ... and has some sound-files there as well.... and he seems really fair priced.

he has earned himself quite a reputation over the past 5 yrs ...
