So i record my bass drum (with my beta 52) and i cant seem to get ride of that pop in the recordings because sometimes ill hit the drum a little hard...any ideas?
thanks

use a mic preamp with a -20db pad on it. or make one yourself if you are electrically inclined. that will stop the signal from overdriving the mic's electronics.

That may work, but the pad stops the preamp from overloading, not the mic. And that mic isn't going to overload, probably.

If you are sure you aren't overloading your pre or recorder, something is making it so that the sound changes a lot when you hit harder. The usual suspects are bad tuning, too much muffling, and mic position.

Try different mic placement.
The beta 52 can handel 174db. I dont think the kick is getting that loud.
Set your gain lower and/or use a compressor in your chain.

I've noticed there are basically two types of bad pops associated with kick drums...
1. from over muffled or beater pads, or even crappy tuning
2. bad mic placement, or two much gain.

I've noticed alot of drummers use almost two much muffling, sometimes on top of a clicky beater pad. That may sound good playing live with a band but usually does not translate well to tape. Usually you've got EQ alot later eithere cutting or boosting. A little bit of muffle with some click can usually be pretty good on still capturing the resonance of the bass drum. Bad tuning can attribute to that problem as well in combination with the above. Also try moving the mic further away from the beater, the closer to the beater usually means more click/snap/pop type sound.

If you record digital and clip it is much more harsh then analog. Try inserting a compressor and check out some compression tips on various articles and watch your meters....
