Honestly, no, I wouldn't buy an Audigy card for recording purposes. Do you have a giftcard or something that you need to blow? You'd be better off buying some cds or dvds. Look into the M-Audio cards if you're on a budget. The Delta 44 & 66 have 4 analog line-inputs each, which you could run from your mixer. If you need more than 4 ins, you could use multiple Delta 66's or get the Delta 1010 or 1010lt, which each have 8 analog ins, I believe.

At risk of getting severely beaten and possibly maimed..........

The Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card is decent, I have one. Tha being said at that price it's WAY TOO MUCH; and
it cannot multitrack. People will grumble about the A/D converters and what not, but I think it's alright.

Just to make this clear; I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS CARD. I am simply giving it it's proper dues.

I've already replaced it with a "professional" interface.

I only need to plug in a single mixer to record one mic at a time. I dont need two mics at the same time, or anything else.

person > mic > mixer > soundcard > program

Thats it, im thinking.

would the 44 or 66 be better?

also, would a mixer or preamp be a better choice?

preamp, unless your getting a killer board

Basically, the only advantage of the 66 is it has SPDIF (digital input/output) which can be used with compatible gear and to sync multiple units together. If you don't anticipate needing more than 4 inputs in the near future (e.g. - miking a drum kit), then the 44 is probably fine. You can get them used for around $100 US on e-bay, too.

For a single channel, an external preamp will typically offer better quality, but a mixer will give you more flexibility as far as monitoring (the delta cards don't have a headphone jack, so you'll have to route the outputs from the delta into a mixer or headphone amp for monitoring).

what would be a good preamp? not too expensive, but not totally cheap. i think ill go with the delta 44. once i get a good preamp to buy, i need to think about mics... studio projects b1? any suggestions? thanks :D

In the budget category, I own both the M-Audio DMP3 ($160 for 2 channels) and the Studio Projects VTB-1 ($100 for 1 channel). Both are solid performers and get plenty of use from me. The DMP3 has a very clean sound which is great for acoustic instruments. The VTB-1 can be clean, but also has the option of adding some grittiness via the toob-blend. For a single channel, I think the VTB-1 is very versatile. Either would serve you well, I'm sure.

I've got the VTB-1 also great for the price their going for nowadays.

Okay, so Im going to get:

Delta 44
VTB-1
(Mic?)
(Program?)
And Ill look around for a nice sound system.

Also, would 256 MB of RAM be good? Should I upgrade my memory, etc to be able to handle it?

Mic hard to say there are so many choices, same with program, but I take it your looking for something inexpensive, quick and easy, so I'll just throw a couple out there:

Mic: Studio Projects B1 or C1 or, Rode NT1-A

Program: cakewalk home studio? or Mackie Traction

PS. it would be wise to upgrade to at least 512 ram everything will just run smoother

The Presonus Firebox has great pres, instrument direct ins, line ins, software, $300, no mixer or preamp needed.

They've also got a $200 Inspiration, which looks way cool, no mixer or preamp needed, software included.

That looks like a really nice setup! Only problem is... I dont have a firewire connection.

btw - as a general rule, I never purchase anything from Best Buy. Their customer service sucks...once you walk out the door, you're on your own. It took a few times of being screwed by them to learn my lesson. Buyer beware.

A Firewire card is about $20.
