Nature of Force
I'm thinking of getting either a Kahler or a Floyd Rose. I want the Kahler for the rollers, and the smooth feel. I want the Floyd Rose for the sustain... What do you guys recommend?

I've had a Kahler Pro on my Charvel Model 2 (purchased in 1986) and I have NEVER had it go out of tune after some serious dive bombing and pull-ups - ever.

Breaking strings will send it out of tune, though, which is to be expected.

But I play a customized American Standard Strat now (have for several years), and no longer use the trem, though I will go to the Charvel if I want bizarre sounds on a recording.

That's cool. My dad has a Peavey Impact (I forget if it's one or two) It has a Kahler on it. It has a nice tone and barely goes out of tune. The only thing is, is that it doesn't have great sustain. It's good, but it could be better. That's probably something that could be fixed though...

It ain't Hip no more

It's hard enough to stay in tune with a standard non-tremlo tailpiece. It's a matter of whether you think it's more important to get the excessive tremlo dive bomb and suck till you can retune or find another way to achieve the same effect (crank up the feedback on your delay and sweep the delay rate knob ) and still stay in tune. If your talking about mangling a cut rate guitar go ahead cause they don't stay in tune anyway. If you have a vintage guitar or one that may one day be a valuable guitar don't do it. Tremolo dive bombing went out with Eddie Van Halens original hip.

Well I have a Peavey HP EXP, and it's a great guitar. It stays in tune fine. I've actually had several people say to me that it's one of the few guitars that you could put a tremolo bridge on and still keep its quality. For now, I'm only looking for opinions.

When Ed still had his original hip was when I was doing my diving..! :D

I haven't touched a whammy bar in years, myself - don't see a use for it in the kinda music I write and play. But It's good to have had a good, solid trem for the times I was bombin' and screamin'.

What the trem showed me, for the most part, was what I don't want in a guitar. I would never buy another axe that had one.

I like the tremolo system in Fenders' Jazzmaster, Jaguar and Electric VI (Bass VI) guitars. While I don't have a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar, I do have a Bass VI. I also like Bigsby vibratos, which is what my Peavey JF2 EX has. I'll eventually get around to putting Bigsbys on both my Gibsons...Les Paul "Special" (Faded Double Cut) and Les Paul Melody Maker. Don't really have any experience with any other tremolo system.

If you want to dive-bomb, there is nothing better than the Floyd Rose. (It doesn't need to be an actual Floyd - both Gotoh and Schaller make very fine clones.) The Kahler works very well too, but it is rather ungainly, and I dislike the position of the trem arm (it's too high - I'm used to the Fender/Floyd thing). Also, I absolutely despise roller saddles - they are, I think, the second worst idea in trem saddles after the fucking rocker saddles that come with Bigsby's and Jazzmasters/Jaguars/etc. They sound like shit, and don't keep tune all that much better than the rocker saddles. For really solid tuning you need to have the string locked at the saddle and the nut, which means a Floyd Rose.
