Best tone

  • Thread starter Thread starter Toker41
  • Start date Start date
jack white of the white stripes, and josh homme, later kyuss stuff and recent qotsa

Some not mentioned:
David Hidalgo
Leo Nocentelli
C.C. Adcock
Carlos Santana (I know, we're all sick of him, but you know it's him from the first note)

And I second:
Billy Gibbons
Brian May
Angus Young
Mark Knopfler
Jeff Beck
Adrian Belew
That dude from Radiohead

And I can't beleive some of you like Tom Scholz's tone. I would rank that among the worst

I also just recently was turned onto Frank Black's 'Teenager of the Year' cd. Although there are a few different guitarists on it, the guitar tones on the whole disc kick ass (as do the songs).

ok, I'll shut up now.

Yeah well, there are also some fools here that like Eric Johnson's tone...

same processed smooth/violin kinda sound, only 20 years later! :p

E J is supposed to be a tone-conaisseur right, claiming to hear differences between different batteries... If so, why is that dumb fuck using a freakin' Dunlop Crybaby wah? (see his rig at www.guitargeek.com)

I mean, if you want to TB all your pedals, fine
If you want to use George L cables instead of Hosa, fine
but choosing a Dunlop Crybaby (not even the 535Q) over any Vox or RMC for that matter is plain DUMB!

Don't know about the wah pedal thing, but it doesn't change the fact that I love his tone. Even if I didn't, I'd still at least have respect for its unique quality, since no one sounds like him (although Carl Verheyen has a similar sound — check this out:
). And while I like Tom Scholz's tone, too, it never seems to vary much, whereas EJ occasionally colors his.

Sorry to disagree with ya, Speedy, but you're still my Metal Brutha. ;)

Whoever on here said CC Deville had the best tone has SERIOUS issues!!! Poison are the lamest excuse for A band I have ever heard. Even now when I see Bret Michaels sorry ass on something, I am like "dude give it UP already!!! The 80's are WAY over!!!"

Oh, and my own partial list

Some have been mentioned, and this ain't complete, but here are the guitarists and a song example for each:

Ted Nugent "Weekend Warriors"
Jeff Healey "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Warren DiMartini "Lay It Down"
Adrian Vandenberg "Burning Heart"
Ace Frehley "Flaming Youth"
Robin Trower "Bridge of Sighs"
Jerry Cantrell "Down in a Hole"
Robert Fripp "Walking on Air"
Steve Hackett "Firth of Fifth"
Tom Keifer "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone") — lead break
Michael Schenker "Cry for the Nations"
David Gilmour "Echoes" (from Live at Pompeii video)
Alex Lifeson "2112"
Randy Rhoads "Over the Mountain"
Eddie Van Halen "Mean Street"
Al DiMeola "Flight Over Rio"

Well, you get the idea. ;)

And when speaking of KICK A** tone, lets not forget Southern Rock!!!

Duane Allman & Dickey Betts

Gary Rossington & Allen Collins from Skynard

Dave Hlubek, Duane Roland & Steve Holland from Molly Hatchet

The Outlaws

The Charlie Daniels Band

The Marshall Tucker Band

For those of you that want to bash please go to the "worst tone ever" thread. This is the "best tone" thread! It seems that I remember asking people not to make this a battle ground, but some of you just can't read.
...to all else...have a nice day.

Ayy Yo
What???
I cant voice my opinion. If someone says CC Deville has the best tone, well I just cant stand back and hear that kinda garbage!!!

But let me get a shout of for:

GARY MOORE!!!

THE DUDE IS AWSOME!!!

I understand the CC thing, believe me. It's just that I started a thread for worst tone and stated that I would rather not get into debates, I just want worst tone opinions...not best tone. Best tones were always the same names, and I wanted to see if worst would go the same way. Some didn't get it so I started this thread to ease thier troubled (if not slow) minds. So please by all means trash CC ( I can think of no one that should get it more)...just do it in the right place, please. Thank you.

Please I'm OCD, just humor me. hehe.

I was wondering if any of the guitar players ever heard Roy Buchanon...

I dug his playing, but always thought his tone was a little thin.

Here are my guys:

The Carlos (flame away, y'all - it's a gorgeous sound)
George Benson
BB King
Albert Collins
Duane Allman (OMG!!!!)
Jeff Beck (usually)

Duane's probably my favorite overall, but gotta give props for the best "tone moment":

Hendrix's "Rainy Day, Dream Away". Just amazing...
