best soundcard 750 - 1000

1. Wich is the best firewire or usb audio interface with good pre-amps in this price category (€ 750 - 1000)? I don't need too much inputs.

I don't know what the Euro will buy these days, but IMHO you generally can't go wrong with MOTU or RME.

In other forum everybody is advising me the apogee duet, but what makes this soundcard so great (I'm a bit afraid because it's so cheap and looks so small and design). Is it comparable too soundcards of RME and MOTU?
