I hope this will fly in the mic forum. It seems to be the place for all mic and preamp questions.

I just got my brand new AT3035 in the mail today:). Happy Happy Joy Joy!! I hooked it up for a moment and it seems very accurate. Accurate enough I just got done nailing another comforter to the wall. Anyway, here is my set up. I have the at3035, a shure cord, several beldin cords, a mackie SR24.4 board, and a Layla 24/96 card. No preamp other than the Mackie. My question centers around the sinal path in the board. I have a few options and I think I am leaning in the right direction but would like some opinions.

Chain options:

1: run into the board and out of the insert right into the layla.
Seems like a good idea but will I have EQ? I will find out shortly:)

2: run out of a post fader aux leaving the trim knob, The fader, channel strip aux six knob, and main aux send knob in the chain.

3: run out of a pre fader aux.

4: assign the channel to a sub and run out of the sub out, or maybe the sub insert.

I have a couple of nice 31 band EQ's, one Yamaha GQ1031B, and one Peavey Q131. I don't plan on adding these into the chain.

I have a DBX Project 1 266 compressor / noise gate, I have in the passed deemed it too noisey to be of much use except in live situations. I can hear clicks when ever the gate kicks in, and if I remember right I can hear clicks even when the over easy lite comes on. Could be my stupidity, I think I need to revisit this peice of equipment. Also not planning on adding that to the chain.

I plan to use software compression and EQ. (wish I had a Joe Meek)

What do you think is the best route for me to go?

Should I buy a Blue cranberry cord (or what ever the call them)? if it really makes a difference $30.00 or $40.00 ain't bad???

Any suggestions would be wonderbra! (that's german for wonderfull)

Thanks

I would make as short a signal path as possible and go out of the insert of your board into your soundcard.I don't believe that you'll have eq but that is the benefit of going out the insert,by bypassing the eq(and everything but the trim knob I believe)you are shortening the signal path which is a good thing as the more circuits that you put your signal through, the more noise can be introduced.Just use software eq and compression and you'll be good to go.

Thanks!

Guess I should know that, but Ya learn somthing every day:)
Thanks alot, I am testing out some stuff right now and it looks like I have alot of rewiring to do!

For some reason when I set this up I felt like I had to have eq on every input, 8 that is. The way I had to set it up using aux's & sub's seemed over complicated. this will simplifie matters alot, and it will free up the rest of my board to use for live sound, and I can mix the cans any way I want without effecting the mix to the card.:):) Duh!!!!! the wasted !#@%$ time.

I am going to try going flat on everything going into the card, I will eq it all later, at least thats the plan. Sound OK? I think I can pull that off, the drums and the bass are the only thing I've been EQ'ing going in. Well we'll give it a try.

Thanks guys

half-normalled

Definitely use the channel inserts on the mackie.

If you only plug the 1/4" cable going from your mackie to the layla 1/2 way into the channel insert on the back, the channel will be "half normalled" and the signal will pass through the gain stages AND the eq stages. You can then apply eq at recording, and use the AUX sends to pass signal to and from your external devices.

The mackie manual does a very good job of explaining this, re-read the pertinent sections and I think you will see what I mean.

I use a similar setup with a mackie 1202 and a delta 44, and by using this method I can use the low cut, the eq, and gain controls at recording time. With the cable plugged all the way in all you get is gain/trim.

I run the delta 1/2 outs back into channel 11/12...
