I've had excellent results with the following techniques and scenarios (for a typical 5 piece kit):
1. 1st mic just inside the venthole of the bass drum, 2nd mic just off the rim of the snare (top side), about 1-2" depending on sound quality tastes, 3rd between the upper toms, 4th on the floor tom. All mics aimed inward toward drummer.
If you are using a DAW (digital audio workstation, like the KORG or Roland products) try using one of the factory preset effects on the input like compression and EQ (Roland products use preset bundled effects for common applications--exxcellent sound). Even though there are no 'area mics', the compressor effect allows for cypbal sounds to come through famously. A little post-track EQ also helps. For non DAW applications:
2. 1st and 2nd same as above, but 3rd and 4th reposition aprox 1-2' (that's feet) from the toms and aimed evenly at the kit. You won't get as full a tom sound this way, but you're guaranteed to pick up the whole kit. (use this technique in a fairly dead room, because you will also pick up the room sound, too)
