Looking for input on the best set(3) of tom mics under or around $300, or 3 good mics for around $100 each. They're mainly for a rock type of sound.

I was thinking about the sennheiser E604 pack...

How about 3 shure sm57's. you'll get multi use purpopses out of them from live and the studio. I would bet you could get 3 of those puppies for less than $300 if you are a good negotiater.

just one idea.

yep

When I first started recording I used an Audio Technica pro25 in the kick and a pair of MXL 603 for overheads. You should have no problem getting this for under $300.

Go with 3 SM57's. Everyone can use a few 57's.
You should be able to get 4 of them for $300 then you can use one on the snare.

This would be my suggestion as well. After close mic'ing for years, I have gotten to the point where I prefer the sound of the toms through overheads. It gives the drums a little room to breathe, and that's where you really get the body of the drumsound.
IF I was going to close mic the toms these days - I'd hook up my ddrum2 unit instead - then I wouldn't have gates or anything else to muck about with.

well, ive got a 57 for snare already - were buying 2 58's for our singers for live shows - maybe i can find a set of 3 and use the 58's for snare - any reason i shouldn't do that? ...also, if anyone knows offhand, which of the 57 or 58 is better for live vocals?

They are both basically the same mic, the real difference is the "Ball" on the end of the 58. I would just use the 57 for the snare since you already have that.
Also, you don't have to mic every drum. The last 2 times I saw slayer, they were just mic'ing every pair of toms.

If you are intent on mic'ing every tom, I would suggest you get ATM Pro-25's. It's a hypercardioid mic, so it will basically only pick up what you aim it at, and you can get those for less than a 57. Plus, it's a great kick mic as well as a great mic to mic guitar and bass cabinets.
Heck, I had to fight my lead singer (he played guitar) to get one of mine back because he loved the thing for vocals live because there was no feedback from it because of the hypercardioid pattern.

Shure has their PG series of drum mics which are fantastic and cost somewhere arround 300(maybe 350). it is worth the extra 50 bucks though. you get three PG56's plus a kick and two overhead/instrument mics.

The PG56 is a great mic though. the frequency curves between it and the 57 are about the same and the sound you get from them are very much alike. i recorded the same snare track with both mics placed next to eachother and you could not tell the difference. the PG series is an introductory package but with a little EQ they produce a VERY professional sound.
