Best scratching strings?

Just wondering about the best way to get the scratching effect, as in "Bombora" by The Atlantics? Being that surf guitarists tend toward 12s or 13s for their strings, would flatwounds be a better choice, for the scratching? If I go with flatwounds, how would that affect my "hot rod up shifting" sound that I'm planning to use in a few original compositions?

now that's an original question !!!

flatwounds eleminate all scratching squeeking or other noises. i have them on one of my guitars for that reason. indeed fat roundwounds give you the fattest scratching.

:D

I guess I'll just go with 12s or 13s roundwound strings, then. Aside from instrumentals like "Apache," "Bombora" and "Diamond Head" that all feature scratching, I've got one or two originals I've been working on that'll have simulated "hot rod up shifting."
