Now I'm new here, so apologies if this gets posted every other day. But what are the best riffs of all time?

The Smiths – What difference does it make?
Pixies – Here comes your man
David Bowie – Rebel Rebel
Pink Floyd – Astronomy domine
Cream – Sunshine of your love
Beatles – Paperback writer
Lynryd Skynrd – Sweet home Alabama
Nirvana – Come as you are (albeit ripped off from Killing Joke)

Best riffs as in "catchy":

Layla - Clapton

Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid - Page

Jumpin' Jack Flash (simple but my personal favorite) - Stones

Aqualung - Tull

A Song by James Gang I forget the name of

Agree paperback writer is great. Other beatle riffs I like are Day Tripper and Here Comes the Sun

hmmmm....

Tush - ZZ Top
heard it on the X - ZZ Top
cheap sunglasses - ZZ Top
just got paid - ZZ Top

i seem to be following a pattern ... lol :D

Speaking of ZZ Top, the XXX and Rhythmeen lp's should not be overlooked. There's so much taste and tone on those two lp's, it'll make you vomit and then quit playing altogether.

Hell's Bells - AC/DC
Highway To Hell - AC/DC
Back In Black - AC/DC
Hell these guys defined "Riff Rock". Sooooooo.....
Anything they recorded - AC/DC
Just my opinion......

Any hit song by John Fogerty. "Centerfield," "Up Around the Bend," "Down on the Corner," come directly to mind. Peace.
Isn't Down On The Corner the easiest, yet coolest riff ever? :)

Back in Black: AC/DC
Hells Bells: AC/DC
Thunderstruck: AC/DC
almost anything: AC/DC
Whole Lotta Love: Led Zeppelin
Walk This Way: Aerosmith
Love in an Elevator: Aerosmith
anything by chuck berry

^^thats a taste 8-)

Welcome to the machine - pink floyd
In my place -coldplay
Hoist that rag - tom waits
Train in vain - the clash

those have been my favorites lately, but my answer would probably change on a day to day basis

The entire Black Sabbath catalog.

If it's not coming from Tony, then it's coming from Geezer.

The beavis & butthead theme tune

Geezer Butler got me into playing bass. Until he came around my house ( I was only 6, but my cousin was 20, hee hee hee), all I had been exposed to was country and western and blue grass. Some amazing musicians there, but the bass was pretty standard and dull. Geezer opened my eyes. I was hooked. And my mom had a fit when I played Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on her old phonograph.... Ah, memories...

1) Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns n' Roses
2) Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Hendrix
3) Aint Talkin Bout Love - Van Halen

Come As You Are sounds like a Killing Joke song?

Which Killing Joke song? I'm a fan of the band but don't have a great deal of their albums...What's This For? (which I don't like), Pandemonium and Democracy.

I can never choose my favourite riffs as I'll choose one then hear another then another and another....

I'll just throw these few band names at you all instead...

ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Helloween, RUSH and Static-X.

I always admire the most catchy yet shit simple riffs...Static-X are an excellent example of this with songs like Push It, Permanence, All In Wait and Black and White.

I do admit that the catchiness probably comes from the vocal melodies but still... :)
