I saved up some money and need to get a good mic for recording rap vocals. I am looking to spend 400 or fewer. Please give me some ideas and the reasons why you like the mics.

thanks

honestly a price tag doesn't make vocals sound great it has a lot to do with the atmosphere your recording in compression etc.

Really what ever mic makes your vocals sound good. No one can really reccommend you a microphone without hearing your voice and understanding what you want out of your microphone such as "color", "warmth", "brightness", "darkness", "nuetral" etc...

Depends... but with 400 bucks mics I might look at are the EV RE-20 or Shure SM-7b dynamic microphone.

If you want a condenser I'd say Audio Technica AT4050 or ADK Hamburg.
YMMV
Good Luck

thanks. I read around the forum and there seems to be two names that come up The Shure sm7 and if you want a dark sound, The Oktava MK-319. Does anyone have any experience with these?

TSM's TM87S is a consender mic with warm sound and i've been using it for recording rap vocals for quite a long time now.. it's cheap.. i caught it from sales maybe a year ago and it cost like 90€ so about 100$.. I think it's even cheaper now.. I have normal voice, not bassy or too high and with good mic-preamp this would be your choice!!

i know most dont hold this mic too highly, but i love it... MXL 990. it's $69 at MusciansFriend.com... but if you're trying to buy a more expensive mic, follow the others' advice.

bless.

Last I checked, a new AT4050 was still over $900.

Also, why would you purposely record hip-hop vocals with a Dynamic mic? For a certain sound on a certain track, sure... But as your main vocal mic? Not a chance...

Under $400, Take a look at the Shure KSM27, or the KSM32 if you find it on sale. Great mics, with warm vocals, good prices.

If you had $900, I'd recommend the AT4050 for sure. It's an awesome mic.

AT4050 well maybe not 400 but 500 new ain't to far off and I probably should have said used.

The reason I suggest a dynamic is because he may not have a booth and I get great results with them over cheaper condensers like the mk-319 and a few others that have been suggested in this thread. Those dynamics work great and even give off a certain flavor that favors hiphop/rap IMO. I'll take a good dynamic over a cheap condenser mic anyday. But as always YMMV.

Word, great answer money. Their is no such thing as a rap mic lol. The At4050 and the rode NTK is the two top dogs i would reccomend.

AT4040. Thats whats most reccomened throughout HR.com when I asked b4 making my purchase. If you have the dough i agree with others and just get the 4050.

I got my mic for $219 off ebay brand new.

i use shure sm7b (without a booth) and get great results..i dont have MUCH to compare to, but i compared it to my old Studio Projects C1 and the SP was crap compared to the shure...picked up huge reverb from the walls..etc...im digging the sm7b..got it going through a dmp3..but if u dont have a phantom powered preamp it will still work

cheers

naw

The mic really doesnt matter, get a good pre amp and a good compressor and you will notice how much better it sounds.
You can have a 70 dollar marshall run thru a 2,000 avalon and get some good vocals, also it matters on how the recording was done.
if your good with electronics you could find a pre amp kit for 300
or even mod a mic for pretty cheap, or diy completely
