I recently bought a used PC for recording and the fan is REALLY noisey and makes some weird sounds (at least I think it's the fan -- what else could it be?). If the problem is the fan, I'd like to buy and install another. Any advice as to the best/quietest? Is there a model that is considered a best buy?

Thanks in advance.

Panaflo's are good, unless you are talking about the heatsink fan, then depending on the CPU, you would need something that moves more air. Although I can't really talk...I've got a thermaltake and about 9 fans running on my super noisy computer...haha... :D

Zalman passive cooling equals no fan at all total silence(cept for the hard drive spinning). But things might run a little hot.

I run a swiftech water cooling system in mine it's quiet but every now and then its sounds like an aquarium.

basically look at the db they put out....anything under 25 is good...i have 6 fans in my comp. all of them are 24 or 25 db and their quiet enough for me to look down at it once in a while and put my hand over the holes to make sure the things still work

The most noise in the computer usually comes from the fan on the power supply. Get a power supply with quiet specs and be amazed.

I agree - search out a quiet PSU and fans, then think about lining your case with a little acoustic foam. It's possible to make something you can't be sure you're hearing, even in a quiet room.

Quiet PC is a company recommended often by magazines in the UK - here's a link to 'Quiet PC USA', which is their sister company stateside. Certainly they have a number of products you should look at and then price check.

Antec also makes a great new Fanless Power Supply..I have read many reviews with nothing but great things to say about it..

I also run a, very simple, liquid cooling system ($90), fits totally inside my mid-sized case, my cpu is so close to my PSU that I don't know if I could have even run a Zalman fan, I used to use a Thermaltake but it was so noisy, now my cpu runs 5% cooler and very quite, now I need one of the fanless PSUs and I'll be set.
