The M-Audio DMP3 will give you 2 great preamps.

The Joemeek Q3 is a very nice one. But one channel.

8 kids... You can get the Behringer ADA8000 for under 200.00 which will give you 8 pres. One for each up and coming singer in the family. lol

Thanks for the plug deepwater

The model is called the threeQ, but it is more than just a mic pre. A full compressor and a full EQ is included. It is also a Burr Brown front end like the Grace 101 uses. Just so the doctor knows...

Of the budget ones, the M-audio DMP-3 is clean and neutral . . . has two channels, and it also uses the Burr-brown front end.

But the one I really like in that range is the Rane MS-1B. Also Burr-brown based . . . like everything else on the market, for the most part. :D Just something about it, I think, that puts it step above the others in it's price point.

hey the behringer one... it has 8 preamp channels for under 200? Does it have crappy sound cause it seems kinda cheap? and the Dmp3 i have heard great things about it. I know it only has 2 channels but isn't one for intsrument miking not vocal miking?

Behringer all the way. They make the best stuff. I hear even MRQQ endorses them.

Do you really need 8 preamps? If you don't, then skip the Behringer. You'll upgrade from that for sure, whereas the DMP-3 will probably be useful for some time.

Other options to check into:

JoeMeek ThreeQ (with comp and eq!)
Studio Projects VTB-1
Used Aphex 207
Presonus BlueTube
