Solved Best pre-amp on a budget with phantom power?

What would you guys recommend? I just dropped $175.00 for the RNC compressor (due to so many good reviews here) and now I need a Pre-Amp so I can power my mic into the compressor.

Any ideas? What's a good combo? I am just now starting to build a rack. I record everything into my AW16G for now and edit in Cakewalk (I'll need help there on effects, etc.)

Also, aside from micing my Marshall and Cabinent, what's the best box to get the "brownest" guitar distortion that I can plug right into the recorder?

Hi SS,

DBX 286A 1-channel pre-amp. It has comp/lim/gate/high-low enhancers/phantom power. Rack-mountable. Quiet. They are used for live sound and such as well, so they are well built. I record it onto a Tascam 2488 using a condenser and it gives you your money's worth.

Dude, you're not gonna get the sound you're looking for without micing your cabinet up. You might get some decent sounds, but just mic it up and you'll be much happier.

Agreed. Do you have a good design for an isolation box?

The DMP3 costs $150. The RNP costs $475. Both are considered a very good value for what they cost. The question is, how much money is available?

I have a musician's friend card with a $1500 limit. I can get the ART PRO Preamp/Compressor for $300.00 and not blow the entire card.
