3 things:

1. Tell us everything you can about what you already have, your setup, signal path, equip, your music, what you want to use the mic for (more that just rapping?), etc, etc.....

2. The 'search' function is your friend. This question has been asked at least 10,067 times since this site has been operating. Use the 'advanced' search to narrow it down to just the mic forum. You will find what you are looking for.

3. There is no 'best' anything. Only opinions and price. That's why we need more info.

Good luck,

Todd

Too many to choose from
What mics do you have now?

Not to steal the thread, but I've seen this question asked quite a bit. And consendor mic's are usually recommended. I'm not a rapper, and I've never recorded rap. In fact, I'm about as far away from rap as you can be in terms of the personality of music that I'm playing.

But my feeling is that I'd want a good dynamic for rappers rather than an "airy" condensor. And a kick arse compressor to give maximum punch. Just seems to fit the personality of the music more to me, I don't know why.

Does everyone use consendors for rap?

It all depends on so many things.

I would suggest focusing on making sure I'm in possession of a decent mic pre and a decent limiter. Then I'd focus on the mic(s). When it comes to vocals it's always better to be in possession of more than one decent mic. The last session I recorded I used a dynamic microphone made by Beyerdynamic. It helped that I plugged it into an A Designs MP-2.

If you just need a condenser because you think you need one, then I'd suggest getting the Audio-Technica AT4047. It's a decent mic on a lot of voices both singing and spoken word. Good luck.
