Which is preferable for recording on a PC: Windows 2000 or Windows 98?

I'd prefer Windows 2000 for its stability, but I'm not sure if most recording software and soundcards are compatible with Windows 2000.

Thanks,

Go for NT unless you can get a written "works on 2000 or your money back" guarantee. HW compatibility is still a problem.

I'm amazed at Windows 2000 hardware support. The only problems I've had were with one cheap Logitech scanner, one printer, and one Voodoo Banshee video card (for which I found bootleg drivers that worked fine).

Hardware compatibility is worse on NT4 IMHO. However, many products had NT4 support but the drivers were never updated for Windows 2000. Microsoft developed a lot of their own drivers that cover a vast majority of hardware out there, so in some cases a product will be labeled as not supporting Windows 2000, but Windows 2000 will have drivers for it.

At any rate, always check the hardware compatibility list.

So far I found Windows 2000 to be much more hardware and software friendly than NT4. Hell, in some cases I've seen windows 2000 install without a hitch on machines that even Windows 98 didn't like.

S2k is the man....and he's right.

I have Win2k on all my PC's now. It's the only OS I will use right now. Check with the manufacturer of the soundcard you decide on, just to be sure. Like they said.

You already answered your own question. Win2000 is (in theory and usually in practice) more stable. However because it is newer not all hardware supports it yet. As time goes on hardware support is becomeing better. So if you already owned hardware the question would be - "is my hardware supported?" But if you are looking to buy, the question is "what system(s) does this hardware work with"?

For the record I use Win 98SE, works fine for me, but all else being equal I would say use W2000
