Best monitors for a tight desktop?

Hi.

I have an old pair of passive peavey PRM308S monitors and an amp that have served me just fine since the early 90s. However, ever since I moved into my new house, they really haven't fit into the studio setup comfortably. They are big boxy things (12x18) and I need to get something smaller to fit my desk. I also wouldn't mind improving sound quality some.

I read all the posts here and set off to ear test the HR824s against a few things I could afford (BX8s and 20/20s). But when I got to the store, they were all damn near as big as my old Peavey's.

Sales guy pushed the KRKv5s hard - but they really weren't set up to ear test the smaller monitors.

Does anyone here have an opinion about monitors with 5 or 6 inch speakers? I'll have the Peaveys for bass and loud. I really need something for constant listening up close.

Your advice appreciated.

I know this doesn't mean much, but I've heard some really great mixes through those little Edirol monitors. I don't even remember if I've actually heard them myself - Wait, no I have... But anyway, the mixes I've heard that were mixed ON them were surprisingly good for such tiny boxes...

Do you think the Edirol's are better than computer speakers or no monitors at all??

I would *think* that they're better than computer speakers... Again, I don't remember how they sound. I can assume that I wouldn't really like them, but I really don't like anything with less than a 6" woofer at the very least.

I just know that there is pretty solid work coming from some people who use them. Hence, I guess that if you can get used to them, they're reasonably decent. And ridiculously small if I remember correctly.

Thanks, John!

Of course, I *know* you wouldn't like them, I mean, you're using B&W's at the moment!!
:p

It's not that, I just never liked small monitors. Monitor 1's, NS10's, 1029's, M5's... I always like to have a pair to reference, but I've never actually liked the sound out of them.

I use the NS10s...but a buddy of mine has a set of alesis monitors with 5 inch woofers that he likes...they sit on his SSL desk (he doesnt fuck arround).

Folkdog, you might want to check my post under the "Best Monitors for Under $300" thread currently running. I was facing the same problem as yours.

Best,

J.

There are some Fostex ones that I've heard good things about and the M-Audio BX5s ... if you come across one great set let me know cos I have the same problem except if anything my music stores are even less helpful than yours ...

I'll second the Fostex PM05's. I preferred them to the M-Audio BX5's. Performing Songwriter apparently loves them. Also, Future Music did a nice review of the PM1.0's. Don't expect big bass. But do expect clean, full, balanced, unhyped sound.

Hey. Just wanted to check back in and thank you all for your advice.

I went out and brought home a couple of different speakers that you mentioned and A/B'd them against the current. That was my mistake. The 5" just can't do what an 8" can do. :(

So I moved my entire studio around, built myself some custom speaker stands to fit the current speakers into the space available, and I'm living with them until I can upgrade to a different 8".

The only real problem was bass. They all sounded sweet. But they just didn't give me the "space" and "umph" I'm used to working with.

One thing I considered, but didn't try was adding a subwoofer. That might have helped.

I did enjoy the heck out of buying a returning all that stuff to GC though. There is something precious to the look on a GC's sales associates face when you return equipment.

Thanks again all!

yeah? My local GC is worth about half a fuckin cent when it comes their help.

Genius ... I think you have to learn to rub them up the right way. I don't know which way that is yet though :)
