as the subject line states, im looking for good monitors to use in a bedroom setup because im completely fed up w/ my altec lansing speakers which are just way too bassy. Just something good enough to get a decent mix im not looking to do professional stuff so i think $500 is a good enough budget for me right now. I think a 5" would be plenty big since i saw what the 8" looked like and they were gigantic, a little too big for a bedroom setup. But if i go 5" would i benefit using a sub to go along??

the yamaha hs50m looked interesting, has anyone used them or is still using them in there rig?

If anyone can comment on their setups and experiences id really appreciate it.

Or what about a good pair of headphone monitors instead, know any good ones out there?

I'd go 8's with no sub long before I'd go with 5's and a sub.

8's might "look" big, but they're not big.

Granted - anything in a bad room is going to be bad - A few broadband traps will go a long way.

Headphones are worthless for mixing.

I have the Yamaha HS-50s in my "studio" room (the box room of the house), where i do the mixing etc after we've recorded in the rehearsal/recording studio rooms.

The HS-50s (for me) are great. They have switches on the back to adjust amount of bass depending on where you have put your speakers. If they're going in a small room as you've mentioned your probably not going to be sticking them in the optimum position which is apparantly 20cm away from wall and not in corners (eliminating additional bass frequencies from being close to walls). The HS-50 has a couple of settings so you can fine tune according to your position. Mine are up against the wall, one being close to a corner. Naughty me.

They sound great, look great and feel good quality. I'm mostly doing metal/rock stuff and for me the HS-50s are a great quality product for the money!

Check out this review of them

these too feature multiple settings for fine tuning sound. They have settings for bass response as well as a handy "corner" setting if you happen to be in a corner. they sound great and look badass, the blue led on top turns red if you're clipping! i think 300 bones or so and then you have cash left over. just my suggestion.

I bought a set of Tannoy Reveal 5A. My studio is my bedroom :D They're small, nearfield and now, after some good mixes, I think they sound fine. They won't fill any stadiums and if you move too far above them, you realise just how directional that top end is, but when you're in the hot seat, they cook!

If you can't make up your mind, go on your budget:)

Anything that'll play Barry White and The Righteous Brothers will work just great in a bedroom setup ;) :D
