A guitar thats in tune, and a good sounding amp. After that its personal preference.

Multiple guitar tracks, mixed and blended together are probably what you are hearing. I mean actual tracks, not cloned tracks with varied efx. The slight variations between tracks is what gives the overall sound the fullness and harmonic quality you are hearing and trying to duplicate. It takes practice and patience to get the hang of how to do it but it is not really hard and worth it to learn if you want that "phat" guitar sound.

those very mice distorted guitar sounds
ah... when I first read that, I thought you said very "nice" distorted guitar sounds.

I think you need a really small speaker, and you could probably use a lapel mic. Might be easiest to use a capo on the 12th or 14th fret, as well.

Trust me - look at my avatar - I know all about mice.

:D

You want to record an album??? what decade do you live in...lol.

Most of your classic records just used an SM57 off axis and an LDC several feet away...usually an u47 or something similer...nowdays a KSM32 is used often.

good playing thru a nice sounding amp/cab/speaker selecting choice micing location with descent mic into descent pre.

IMO the sound source (playing, amp, cab-speaker) is significantly more important than is the mic or pre... assuming the mic and pre aren't total poo.
