U87 is a great mic. But that mic is not a budget-mic.

The best mic depends on the application. What's your signal chain? It ain't of much use buying a U87 to record on a old analog budget 4 track... And it depends alot on the voice in question. Some voices sound better through a sm58 than through a U87. Or at least, that's what rumours say...

There is no such thing as "THE BEST" - there is such a thing as "IT DEPENDS"

As Roel correctly stated sometimes the lowly SM57 or SM58 is the "best" for a given situation. Other times a U87 is what's needed.

Price DOESN'T necessarily dictate effectiveness for a given application.

Yea, verily Sonusman:]

But, the Yorkville mic (s) do a nice job for a small price; I have one; I also have an AKG 3000 which does a nice job; I also have a few other mics that do a nice job; I guess it depends on your gear and talent and tweaking?

Keep recording.

The 58 has a built-in windscreen, the 57 does not... the capsules however, are identical.

Well, if I want a more general purpose mic (say for recording vocals and much guitars) which one of them should I prefer ?
(SM57 / SM58) ?

It really doesn't matter.... if you get the 58, you unscrew the windscreen and you have your 57...
