What do you think the best mic for rap vocals would be. Most have told me Shure58 is the best bang for my buck. What do you all think?

I've looked at hr-faq.org : Not much reference

Heard some good things about the Shure sm7. You thinking live or for recording? If live, don't see why a 58 wouldn't be a great choice.

I think you'd do fine with a Shure SM57/58 or SM7. The combo that the big boys seem to like for this style of music is a U87 with an Avalon 737 pre, but that may be out of your budget.

Good luck.

The Shure SM58 is a good live mic but horrible in the studio. If you are looking for a good mic at a great price check out the Rode NT1-a which costs around $200 new at G C. You will have to get 48v phantom power for this mic and I recommend a cheap mic pre amp like the Presonus Tubepre. I think those 2 make a good pair because the Rode NT1-a is a bright solid-state mic and the Presonus might warm it up a bit. There are alot of options but the most important factor in getting a good vocal mic these days is how well the signal quality is maintained during recording. You can spend a couple of thousand and get a great mic or spend a couple of hundred and get a mic that works, the choice is yours

/\ Nightschild has some great advice there, I'd recommend that as well.
