I want to be able to record individual tracks to my computer through an interface. I need at least 12 tracks with preamps.

I was thinking of getting a DigiDesign 002R interface with protools and a DigiMAX LT Mic Pre preamp. I know that this will work, but im not sure if it is the best solution or the best buy.

Has anyone had experience with this? whatd you do? thanks much!

I'm not a big ProTools person, so I'd be like...MEH...

In other words, I'd look at the RME cards with all those ADATs in and out, then I'd grab a an M-audio Octane, a Behringer ADA8000, and either a Presonus or a Focusrite Octopre with the ADAT option. (There's been a lot of ragging on the Presonus units lately in the other forums, but I personally like my Presonus MP20...)

But if you're into Protools, there's not much else I can say. Let your workspace (including hardware and software) dictate your interface...

I am planning to buy a Digi 002rack myself one of the following weeks!

I am a Pro Tools supporter (most professional studio's also rely on pro tools so you'll be much more compatible) so I think the Digi is worth the money. Other options are Motu, good value for money, but no Pro Tools:)

I am also interested in ProTools LE. I heard it was very practical, and I dig the "all-in-one" solution with the rack. To bad it costs a grand.

yeah i heard that motu doesnt have as nice as pre amps as digi. and pro tools i was told is much better than what comes with motu. any arguments?

MOTU rocks... IF.... You are willing to give up your pc. An 828 mkII with DP4, Mach Five and a mac will produce every bit as good of stuff as any protools setup. I agree with Sklathill tho' let your equipment dictate what you buy. For what I do the MOTU setup is perfect. To be honest I don't intend to produce market ready cd's from my home studio. I will go to a pro studio to do that (If I ever get to that point!). In fact I compose most of my stuff one track at a time with a Tascam US-224 my Apple Powerbook and Ableton Live. It all depends on what you ultimately want to accomplish and how much jack you are willing to part with to get there.

yeah, we want to be able to produce professional, radio-ready cds in the future and upgrading our interface again would not be pleasurable. I didn't know that the motu was only compatible with macs, i thought it worked with both... If this is the case i think we have to go with the digi and the preamps because i don't want to buy a mac.

Well, in my personal opinion, Pro Tools on a PC is something that is less than: good. Many of my peers also share this opinion, but they also got the money to spend on a multi-platform studio. if you really want Pro Tools, make sure you know exactly what you're getting into on the Windows side. I personally haven't had a good experience with an PT on PC, nor do I know anyone who has, but if you know someone who has, follow his lead and make THE system you KNOW will work.

MOTU is a very similar situation. While it is crossplatform hardware with drivers for all the major Windows iterations, many people have problems getting it to run properly on Windows machines. Hence, practically, it's "Mac-only" hardware. To its credit, I personally know guys who use the PCI-324 and a couple of boxes with Cubase in Windows, so if there was a deal on MOTU hardware that I had to take up, I would follow my friend's lead in setting up the system with all its MOTU-centric peculiarities...

I run a Digi002 with windows and everythings works great. I used mainly protools while at Fanshawe so I felt more comfortable sticking with it. I did a lot of research before putting out the bucks and now that I've made the commitment I'm more than content. No operating system issues...everything really runs quite smooth...I run an AMD 2500XP Chip, 1.3 G DDR RAM, a couple 40 GIG hard drives with XP. I also use the reason plugin's within protools LE with a midi controller and again...no issues!!

so good luck!

MOTU hardware is cross platform the software isn't. I have just found that the hardware works best under the software it was designed for.

MOTU bites the big one on pc. They just can't seem to get their drivers to work right on Windows OS.

i think this is what im going to go with, the digi002 and an external 8 channel preamp. I think it will be the best set up for the money, and for under $2000 i think its a great deal.
